I heard a replay of NPR's On the Media, last night where they talked about how inaccurate and misleading information is exceedingly hard to correct. It basically said that once people believe a piece of information, however untruthful and whatever measures are taken to disprove it, there is very little likelihood that they will ever actually believe what is true. A lie truly walks a thousand miles before the truth ever takes a step.

Fox is smart enough to know that playing to peoples' emotions will win them over much more effectively than any information ever will. By portraying it's followers as "the last hope of America" it gives a sense of power to people who feel powerless. All they have to do then is tell them who their enemy is and the people will attack like remote control soldiers.
