btw some banks (or credit unions) or caises as they are known in francophone areas may offer free certified cheque services as part of your account. I'm not sure of any in Atlanta Georgia though that do this here is an example of one such company -

http://www.radiuscu.com/_accounts/chequing.asp

Other terms that may be used

cashier's check
official check

etc.. it depends on the term the financial institution - but it is slightly different also.
As with a cashiers check I'm pretty sure the bank takes your money then pays the check from their own money, with a certified check the bank sets aside your money then pays with it.

Here is a bank in georgia that appears to offer free official checks..

You need a 100.00 minimum balance or it is 4$ per month for the account and you have to open the account with atleast 25$. The 100$ hopefully is within your means to have extra.

This is why people should date their cheques to only be cashed on a certain day, and to place holds on cheques or establish a enddate check.

This is a major flaw of chequeing that allows banks and individuals to manipulate peoples cash flows.

Checks should not only have an initialization date but a data that can have them expire if they arn't cashed by a given day.

You might try to place a hold on your funds for every cheque you write with your bank.

Eg. if you write a $500 cheque you can then contact your bank and request a hold on $500 until the cheque number has cleared.
They might do this for a fee or for free. I feel your pain, I've had a number of chequing issues in the past, and unfortunately many companies don't do this.

If possible why not set up a direct deposit arrangement with your landlord or alternative payment arrangements such as money order.

That is set aside those funds for a given chequing item.

same idea as doing it via money order

They will add about 10$ to your rent cost though.

I can't even imagine the feelings that would overcome a bank teller who saw you walking up.

That doesn't stop a bank from performing oooh sorry banking errors. Or for people who have funds owing from not paying stopping or canceling a payment that is being processed. And when you are highly liquid and scraping it month to month even one banking error or third party stop can put you under. This can be highly damaging. I had such a situation happen to me in the past, and it was at no fault of my account balancing it was due to both the third party and the bank not following my instructions and having inaccuracies with my account. Also I've had similiar issues with a governmental agency that provided false information redated payments then put me in a bad credit situation due to non payments due to their reordering of payment dates that had other repercussions including ineligibility for certain government grants. This due to their error. This has continued to what ammounts to thousands of dollars in grants due to someone reordering payment dates against my account - rather than following my instructions for specific payments to be redated for the ammount owing but resulted in them switching all the amounts to that date - this is only part of it, but it shows you how the other parties involved in your finances can act to harm your position even though you are balancing just fine it is them to effectively screw up your situation - this totally the same as I can see this happening with a landlord who holds cheques. Also the value of funds can change.

Not all companies or people accept electronic banking. I had a problem with one such company who wanted me to send money via the mail - and that is illegal - else they would get the government after me --- and what they asked me to do was illegal.

It is scary when a federally contracted company doesn't accept payments by electronic banking or credit card. Has me wonder why they don't want their money electronically tagged via forms of banking that would have an automatic transaction record and it being fully tracable rather than cash deposits and paperless trails.

Again, my landlords were amazing. First thing, my lease was signed yearly. Second, it was written in the agreement that they wanted at least 30 days notice if the tenant intended on leaving.

So yeah, not something I ever had to worry about.

and some people are grown up and realize that living paycheck to paycheck is not something that anyone should do. It's called being responsible, building up a 1 or 2 month cushion in your savings to cover the inevitable unexpected expenses that happen in life, instead of crying that your landlord tried to get money you owed him a day early.

it's quite pathetic honestly...maybe you should ask your parents for the money then.

You're a douche nozzle. The reality is, some people aren't fortunate enough to make enough money to do this. There is an overwhelming number of people who live pay cheque to pay cheque, and for a large portion of them, it isn't their fault. So shut your trap.

i pay cash by the 5th of each month. no problems. my landlord(s) are pretty cool too even if i'm occasionally late as long as i let 'em know what up.

In Canada, if you signed a lease and you breach the contract, they can come after you in court for the remainder of rent. So they are likely going to get it anyway.

I bet she just stays in the house and never does anything right? Even people making crappy salaries can give themselves a cushion if they are smart. Tons of people raise families with very little and still can have a rainy day fund for when stuff goes bad, forgive me if i'm not overly sympathetic for sakes you ginger snookie.
