I think this is the first time since I've been on TA that an election thread hasn't been started during a major election, full of high-fiving and circle jerking. I... can't seem to figure out why. :p
The Republicans have taken control of the house by a very large margin. Here are a few of the stats (which may change marginally by tomorrow):
1) GOP goes from 77 seat minority to a 56 seat majority in the House... has picked up net 59 seats so far with 15 still to be called. It will probably by close to 65 total when it's over.
2) 1928 was the last time a party lost more than 55 seats.
3) Governors: GOP went from 24 states to what looks to be 33. Democrats will now have 17.
4) GOP picked up 6 Senate seats. Obama's Senate seat in heavy Democrat Illinois went to a Republican.
5) North Carolina's state legislature went GOP for the first time since 1898.
6) A few Tea Party weaklings proved they didn't have what it takes; the awful Harry Reid has a disapproval number of 55% and won. Pretty bad for Sharon Angle. Christine O'Donnell is history (good).
7) Line of the night from Marco Rubio after crushing the competition in Florida: | quote: | | We know the power in the United States House of Representatives will change hands. So today, my young hopychangey idealists, was a complete and utter rejection of Obama's agenda on full display. We have seen our "european social democracy" future in Greece and France unraveling in front of us with riots and anarchy, and we do not want. Will Obama pull a 1994 Clinton and declare he heard the American people and move towards the center? Or will he "fight his enemies" (other Americans) who oppose his agenda as he proclaimed on Spanish television last week. All I know is, the next 2 years are going to be interesting.

I particularly enjoyed Arizona voting against Affirmative Action and the people in my state voting to end a tax on candy. |

also, can someone (not kev) explain the facets of obama's "far left" agenda? there were attempts to make healthcare affordable, and a limp-wristed stimulus package that consisted of almost 50% communist tax cuts, necessary TARP II supported by almost all economists...
what else was there coz i must have missed it. |

Dems arent in trouble because they were too liberal...they are in trouble because they werent liberal enough...oh and because every major piece of legislation ws blocked by the right wingers, so congrats your tactict of making dems look back to make people angry at them so that you can come back to power and the country up much more has worked splendidly :p
You see ther next two years interesting, i see them as mostly the same. The republicans will have hissy fits over anything that smells of liberal and doesnt include tax cuts for the rich and corporations and the dems will cave in as always because they are huge ing pussies. So as usual nothing will get done, america will continue to decline due to your failed economic and foreign policies and the res of the world will continue considering revoking your independence since youre clearly not able to take care of yourselves ;)
PKC, dont you know by now, what most of us consider fairly right wing ideas are to kev radical leftist ideas...borderline communism really :p |
