i produce on a regular dell computer , nothing special. payed like 500bucks for it.

its causing problems and crashing and viruses and such, and im seriously considering buying a apple computer for producing.

will the basic iMac do the job? as far as speed and stuff?

if the basic one wont be enough power for my productions, what would u recommend i upgrade to? I dont want the desktop mac cuz is almost 2,000 compared to imac being 1100 or so.

thanks for ur feedback

IMAC is a steal. Same benchmark as the quad core desktop or close enough. The new mac pros are a rip. I bought one but man , it performs just a little better than my 2009 mac pro. If you don't need hardrive space which for me was a main concern, the Imac is fantastic.

Even the onboard sound is great. I was running a project with my apogee ensemble and it somehow got disconnected and then went to the normal audio out and the performance was almost the same.

And the screen is beautiful.

I think the last one got deleted as it went off track.

Here's the previous one to that.

Simply put, the imacs are by far the best value computer that apple have put out (performance vs cost).

As M4B said, the mac pros are more powerful but the ratio of cost to power is not as good as the imacs. So basically, if you have lots of spare money and performance is all you care about then go mac pro, otherwise imac every time.

The on board sound is actually quite usable and not that much of a performance drag, and the screens are outstanding. I have to spend sometimes several days in a row (without sleep) in front of screens
and the imacs or the cinema displays are the only ones that don't give me fatigue.

As stated in the other thread I have the basic imac from a couple of years back and it's still nice and powerful for running logic, a ton of AU's and samples. Just max out the ram and get a good (non sleeping) external drive. You won't need another computer for 4/5 years at least.

if you can find a used mac pro late 2008, early 2009, get that.

It is pretty much the same as the 8 cores they are selling now. Little less CPU but still. I have both and the difference is not noticeable.

Do not get the Quad core mac pro. The benchmark is actually worse than the 2009 mac pro which costed the same amount about 2 years ago. Well if you still do, just make sure they throw in Ilife. lol

Don't do the quad - it benchmarks and performs worse than the latest top tier imacs.

Richie - did you logic node in the end and did you ever use that program I suggested for comparative updating between machines?

Have you tried cleaning that thing up first? It's not the computer's fault if there's viruses.

i did find a software that did as you mentioned but I passed on the nodes as I really do need to run things in 64 bit. I bought vienna Ensemble which is like a midi/audio over lan which is working out pretty well in tests. Will try it out next project. Right now i;m just using midi sync but once i'm done with this group of pieces, I will try the VSL ensemble thing.

why dont you just clean it up instead of buying a whole new one? or try to upgrade.

Shutting down by itself = build in mechanism to stop CPU from overheating - Open the side plate and use compressed air to remove the dust.

Crashing = Badly cracked software and dust. Buy more of your software and clean the dust.

Viruses = Download some decent free antivirus software or buy better one. No, it should not take huge amounts of CPU power. If it does you're doing something wrong or you haven't cleaned the dust inside your computer or your CPU have already been destroyed. Don't use google to discover free porn.

If you're running xp = try windows 7. If you're running Win 7 already download the version on Microsoft download page. Versions that come with the commercial computers have too much pointless bloatware in them(these will slow down your computer).

I wouldn't buy a new ( Apple ) computer at the moment. Intel is releasing Sandy Bridge in Januari. So new ( Apple ) computers should follow soon.

Several companies such as Acer have already leaked some info of their next generation computer, so if I was you, just wait.

LIke others said, reformat and don't install dodgy software on it. Then buy a new one after the update if you still want an Apple computer :)

edit: Unless you want a Macbook Air, they just updated so no chance they'll recieve an upgrade to the Sandy Bridge platform. You can buy that one now :p
