But that would beg us to explain why "New Age" stuff is more socially accepted for women in the first place. Why does it have a "feminine" image (if it indeed has one)?

"Intuition".

Well, healing/healers have historically been associated with witchcraft. In the past, women healers were burned as witches or persecuted for being Satan worshipers and all kinds of other . I'm guessing that the image that dominates such practices is a result of women purposely feminizing them in order to gain some kind of power in their communities.

edit: many societies actually believe that women have unique healing powers. Ideas associated with fertility and all that are usually a big part of new age and alternative healing. So I guess that's also where it comes from.

Thank the ing universe for those crystals.

My mum keeps crystals in every room of her house. Different crystals for different purposes, you know? And you have to 'cleanse' them every once in a while too. Otherwise, they don't do their ing job properly.

Not even joking :wtf:

There are 5 or 6 just in her car :stongue:

I've got a crystal in my bedroom :p 'tis a gift which I keep hanging on that beaded string you yank down to alternate between high/medium/low on your ceiling fan because it looks kind-er neat. The girl who gave it to me has yet to bless it so I reckon by now it's clean out of qi. I also listen to Enigma.

deal w/ it

And I guess "nurturing" is also stereotyped as a female activity, and that seems to be what a lot of the crystal stuff is about.

The image of men is more about ATTACK KILL DESTROY.

To a woman, it doesn't matter whether something actually works, as long as she "feels" it does.

That someone with 2 science degrees related to the biological and medical sciences shouldn’t be confused by bull remedies such as ‘hands on energy healing’.

As long as you’re being paid with my tax dollars you can keep your bull remedies to afterhours thank you very much. if people want to seek out bull medical practices there are plenty of places they can do that outside the hospital, and save overworked nurses/doctors for patients whose brains haven’t already fallen out.

I'm not saying that health care professionals should push their own remedies onto people. But they ARE obligated to incorporate a person's OWN health practices into their care if that's what the individual wants. It's written right in our practice standards. Your mother was educated many years ago. Health care has changed and it continues to change. You might disagree, but I'm telling you that's what the expectation is in todays health care environment.

Also, nurses/doctors can avoid being overworked by listening to their clients and giving them what they want. It wastes time and money to provide individuals with interventions that they don't want or need. ;)

Btw, nursing is a HUMAN science also - and the values and beliefs that underpin the profession are guided by providing care that is holistic and all encompassing - NOT just biomedical.

Look, that’s fair enough and all but it galls me that you or any other professional has to waste time on bull remedies. Yes yes, I appreciate it might not be a “waste” to the person pretending they’re being helped, but in the context of sensibly applying finite resources in a hugely expensive and under-resourced sector, it’s definitely a waste. If people want to be healed by the sun or feng shui, they can do that in the comfort of their own home. Don’t approach the epicentre of western medical infrastructure if you wanna use crystals for your cancer.

Yeah, maybe in an alternative universe where hospitals have enough resources to begin with ;) there’s never enough staff in ED or ICU and its hard to give these patients “what they want” when often they’re unconscious :p
