They're buggy as hell, crash quite often, then automap is really flakey and doesn't work with all programs.

I know they have release firmware updates so now they are very stable and do work on Logic, but many people still report serious problems on other software.

Now bear in mind that PC for them was an after thought, as they did so many deals with apple based software, so I really wouldn't hold your breath about getting great PC support.

Don't get me wrong - on paper they are ing incredible, and I LOVE those faders (exactly the same as used on the MC5 which costs $200k), but the Artist series has been plagued since day one.

If you were a logic user then I'd say jump on it right now as they are a joy to use, but you'll want to wait at least a couple of months after they release it for PC to see if they have problems.

I'd certainly be no early adopter for sure.

The guy that told me is usually spot on with his information.

Apparently, there will be full PC support next year.

The only other option i'm looking at would be a Mackie Universal or maybe even a DM3200 and dump my MR816x

Whichever way I go, I don't want to have to change it for the forseeable.

wow didnt know about DM3200, it rocks!

Once you go with more monitors, it is really hard to go back. I'm all about things that help workflow and being able to have everything in view definitely makes things faster. I honestly don't know how people manage. I'm at my parents for christmas and they have this tiny 19 inch screen and it is so hard to keep switching what you are working on. You probably don't need 4 but the problem I had is that I had 3 for my one mac then got another mac and I have this issue with things being symmetrical. I find symmetry soothing.

I believe the PC drivers will come - I actually think they've had it all along and it was just the deals they kept doing with Apple software bundles that meant it hasn't been released yet. The only concern is how fast they act to fix the bugs on PC, but hopefully they'll get there.

The universal control is good, but overpriced for what it is, especially when you want more channels.

Personally, I'll never touch a DM series mixer every again (we had 40 of the DM4000's at a store I used to manage on a cheap deal and they were such a pain in the arse, we stopped giving tech support for them) These days I just don't see the market need for these mid format digital mixers, apart from for the very specific niche of giving a studio on a severe budget a large number of physical input channels for tracking recording sessions, but with EDM, hardly anyone ever needs that.

Also, if you're going to record for EDM chances are it will be one or two channels or over dubs which you'll just need a nice mic and pre for, and I personally wouldn't put a very nice singer/mic/Pre combo through those converters on the tascam as they're no better than a prosumer interface.

So basically the DM series are just control surfaces with a large number of inputs with average quality converters.

You can buy control surfaces cheaper, and get better converters for less.

That is unless you like mixing on those and then just digitally summing and printing to your DAW, but that kind of defeats the point of the daw integration which is a big part of the feature set and cost.

Hmmmm, reminds me of an old GS thread - this is ing wicked:

Basically for roughly about the same money as the DM3800, you can buy a few artist series module and desk (that one is by argossy) to make a serious desk.

Here's a more developed image:

And here's one where a guy has built something similar:

see I couldn't see a god damn thing with those monitors. I would need a prescription just to use the computer. And whats the point of looking at pictures of underage teens naked if I can't tell they are underage.

it is a little too dull for my tastes. I like having a few paintings to look at and I need a window or I will get panic attacks. maybe replace the large TV with a big water tank with fish. That would be neat with soundproof glass. and an lcd monitor that can slide down when you need it. Nothing says success like expensive fish. I mean sure, clients might be impressed by the monitors but trust me, once they see the collection of endangered fish in your tank, they will just assume you are rock and roll and sign the agreement on the spot. "So what do you use for software" "Did you see the in giant cod in my tank? Good, now lets talk about the money.
Mise
yea lets add a 20msq2 "garden" and some more 42" LCD placed aside!.. and some weird postmodern paintings!

edit:
actually better some small sculptures!

i rather have puma. to keep the hiphoppers away.

well I was serious about the art. That room just seems way too office like I would start doing my taxes instead of doing music. I'm semi serious about the fish tank. I mean ideally I would want a cooler tank that can house a few penguins but I think that is overdoing it. I'm a big fan of penguins. I also enjoy big fish that swim slow. I find that relaxing. You don't see them stressing out.

And the playstation is just a distraction and you will inherently have to remind your clients that no they can't smoke pot and play Tony Hawk. Of course if I ran a studio, I wouldn't let those types of riff raff in. Especially the hip hop guys. I'm not inferring black people here when I say people that listen to rap tend to be a little more shady that other subcultures. Not a race thing as most listeners are probably white, just a culture that encourages people to be thugs and the last thing you want is mc Spliff telling his friends where you live and when you work. I suppose I would make certain exceptions for rap that isn't what mainstream rap has become.
