Oh, I should have said... I'm American. This incident was while entering Canada. I did comply, and never cross the with anything to hide. Just wondering what the technicalities were. I appreciate the info though. |

While we are granted easier access to cross the border between US and Canada it does not necessarily mean it is easy.
Sounds visa related to me. They don't mess around with that stuff. I had great difficulty crossing into the US after Bobby and I got married prior to getting my green card.
As anyone who travels regularly for business purposes - you are not allowed to make money in the US without a proper visa or documents.
As well, they have the right to cease everything that they want. This is going into the US at least. I would assume that going into Canada is much the same.
They can cease and keep anything that they feel needs to be investigated.
They have the right to search through your laptop, phone, car.. whatever they feel is necessary. |

Yeah do they really expect the truth in that situation? "Fine sir, there's 15 rolls in my friend's bra here....so...we're cool right?" |

For the phone thing if you're concerned I would just password lock it before getting to the border and then you can leave it in the car if they search. Not much they'll be able to do with it then and I can't imagine the search guy running in to ask for your phone PW.
With my border experience I'd say it's almost completely who you get and how they're feeling that day. Some people operate on rational, some people go by the book and some people will just mess with you cause they can. It's a sad reality but too many people get these jobs primarily for the "power" they offer. |

Why the is it so god dammed hard for people to understand this???? |
the answer is simple. most people dont have a clue how the industry works but think they do. other people who realize they have no clue will listen to these people because they think they are knowledgable and thats usually how rumours get started. its like the blind leading the blind. |

I really wasn't concerned about the phone, just curious about the legality of the issue. And I totally agree it's all about who you get when you drive through. The two times I've been pulled in have been by what looked like 22 year old kids who were all up in their sense of power. |

I don't even know if they went through my BlackBerry, but I repeatedly asked for it back and they refused.
My most recent situation was like something off COPS. Vehicle got boxed in, was told to put my hands on the dashboard and not move, had two cops physically remove my friend and I from the vehicle, and were led to a "secure holding area" as they called it, and guarded by a guy with a very large rifle for almost an hour, then finally let us go with no problem...Police dogs made a mess of my car though  |

Ya I actually never thought of the phone thing at the border until it was mentioned here. But keep in mind with Android, iPhone and now I think the Torch as well having the "global search" where you can type in a word and it shows anywhere it is stored on the phone (text msg, email, song, basically anywhere) that could get you some serious harassment if the right knew how to use it. I can think of more than a couple keywords that if searched on my iPhone could probly pull up some incriminating convos...
And that's rough about the dogs. The worst is they can literally have a mechanic rip your car to shreds removing anything they want. Then they hand it back and say not our problem, you put it back together. Heard of it growing up and didn't believe it until my friend experienced the all to true reality of its existence.
At the end of the day I find it's best to deal with customs as you deal with the CRA. Just be as polite as possible, don't argue, keep feeding their ego, and if you get caught on anything at all play dumb and say sorry... It sucks but it makes life easier in the long run. |
