It's hard to describe the US as an uncompetitive global player. Tax rates aren't anything, but a convenient excuse. |
Are you kidding me? Large businesses (who employ large amounts of people) are fleeing the US to other markets, or (considering your understanding of the issue, you probably don't know this) are recording profits outside the US and never repatriating them (to avoid taxes) - thus never re-investing them in the US economy.
The US is significantly hurt by their corporate tax policies and the stagnant growth (1.8%!!!) is precisely due to this.
I sometimes wish liberal arts studies would reserve their commentary on economic and fiscal issues until they actually understood more than newspaper-economics. |

The conservatives are so incredibly blessed that the NDP and Liberal parties havent yet combined. |
Would rather not see that - we'd be headed down the path to a two-party system, and we all know how well that works in the grand scheme of things. |

Can you show some examples of how companies who are given significant tax breaks actually invest it back into the local economy? By say... hiring more people, not actually pocketing it and continuing to outsource into oblivion? |

Thanks Dave, I was about to basically post the same thing. I figure RabbitJoker is one of these people that actually believes that corporations are the engines of the economy. NeoCons treat economics as a religion and any economic discussion that doesn't coincide with their particular ideology is nothing short of heresy. It's this particular attitude that has caused companies to stop taking innovation seriously. 40 years ago, R&D was most large companies biggest expense. Nowadays, if said company even has an R&D division, it's an afterthought. The biggest expense now is marketing, or as I like to refer to it, "How do we repackage our old crappy product and con consumers to throw away good money after bad, rather than develop something new that's actually more efficient, more durable, and more useful".
That said, I will give props to companies who do still push the envelope. If it wasn't for RIM, you wouldn't have the newest generation of SmartPhones. If it wasn't for the porn industry, you wouldn't have most e-commerce, security, and interactive web technologies. Good on them; everybody else - get off the golf course and get to work! |

Really annoyed that the conservatives decided to not answer questions related to internet neutrality and UBB practices |

The resource sector is a great example of this. |

Resources are also finite though so it's a whole different can of worms than other organisations that can operate indefinitely.
If you look at the oil sands we're subsidizing American companies so that they can turn a profit out of something which is not naturally profitable. Sure it creates jobs but so would spending that money on other investments as well. |

Power to the NDP for convincing increasing amounts of people that we do not want a conservative government in general, nevermind a majority.
Hopefully the Liberals replace Ignatieff soon after this.
I wonder how Canadians will survive without the magical Harper majority though? By all accounts, our economy is going to crash, crime is going to run out of control... destruction, chaos, fire and brimstone! Anybody else stocking up on supplies to survive the apocalypse? |

| Soooo much conservative generated fear mongering going on. They truly do employ the lowest form of campaigning... |
