Deadmau5 breaks down the take-home pay for a celebrity DJ (pg. 22)

I don't know how or where the Mau5 gets all this slack from, but I've had a great experience with him in 08 before Zabiela went on at Guv and he was playing. I somehow got in to the section behind his booth and while he was playing I told him to play his longest road remix which was #1 on Beatport at the time. He said he only had the dub version, which I think he only said he had because that version wasn't out at the time. But yeah he was laughing and joking around with people and seemed really cool. He eventually played the track later. It was probably one of my fondest memories with a 'superstar DJ'.

I think what some people don't realize here is that he has some really good 'underground' tracks. Tracks like Teaster, Tau V2, Templar (ol school dark prog feel) etc. are really impressive...I like Cyclic Redundancy myself as well...that's a sick piece of uplifting work. But I think the masses just like his big tunes and would probably turn themselves off to the songs where he keeps it real (whatever you wanna define that as being).

All in all I respect the Mau5 for producing some real sick tracks that would appeal to the more hardcore electronica fan and at the same time tracks that appeal to the masses, like the stuff with Kaskade or whatever. He still keeps it real but his big crowd pleasing tunes will for sure overshadow his other songs.

kaskade is the unwanted prison rape of electronic music.

None of this is new, the flak you receive on here unfortunately comes with the territory -- prior to you it was Armin who got slagged, and before that Tiesto, and before that Oakenfold.

It's no fun to come back from the hotel after an amazing gig only to see someone slamming you (or your set) but that's what happens. You could have a thread with 100 positive reviews but it's the one negative one that eats away at you. It takes A LOT to not reply back to defend yourself. I'm not a DJ so I can't comment on that aspect but I have heard enough over the years. It's a slippery slope - even if you are in the right, and come in to defend yourself, you always run the risk of making the problem worse -- those that don't like you won't care what you have to say and those that are on the fence sometimes see your response as being ego/power tripping related. The ones that rise to your defence, are seen as 'kissing ass/ball washing'...it's all ed up.

TA, for the most part, lets people say what they want without repercussion... I don't censor things and TA doesn't have many rules because life is full of rules and once you wrap too many rules around something it becomes less fun. The major caveat of that is then you end up having ppl threatening to sue you for defamation because of comments said about them on your forum. Believe it or not, this place was once all all lovey dovey. Like most forums in their early stages, many people know each other and don't want to push boundaries... but as things grow ppl want to carve out their own little niche and label those that are too positive as either EDM n00bs or kissing ass for some nefarious purpose.

Also, from my experience, the negativity seems to be worse in Toronto. It's one reason why it's nice to travel to hit up a party - it's a completely different experience. Some would argue the 'scene' evolved into this after 'raves' migrated into nightclubs and dancefloors migrated into havens for bootle service booths... but that's a topic for another thread.

I believe I once heard that trying to argue on the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics... even if you win you still come out looking retarded...

How do artists get paid? Do they get a cheque monthly, one big chunk in an advance??

How about event pay? Does the promoter pay the label who in turn pays the artist??

I've always wondered how the pay structure worked...
