Blame HR. Seriously, HR really needs to stay the out of hiring, how they even got into that position is beyond me. HR is usually the biggest bag of tools in any company.

HR was pretty divorced from his hiring process. A head-hunting firm did the dirty work and he was at the top of the pile presented to the board of directors.

great thread, I think really what it boils down to is that you have to see the end result and than take the necessary steps to get there.

Nobody else a fan of the idea that it is mostly inborn traits?

If so, I guess I can live with Arbiter being the only one who agrees with me.

:p

Not sure about inborn, but I completely disagree with the idea of talent being the most important factor. Talent might matter at the very top level, however reaching it has more to do with hard work. And maybe a more abstract "talent" for learning, improving and training. Some of it is inborn, alright. But I find the traditional idea of talent, as in "he's such a talented musician, one day he'll play in an orchestra" or "I have no musical talent at all, I could never learn how to play the violin" pretty stupid.

What is it, do you think, that separates those that get what they want from those that don't? Is it simply hard work and focus? Attitude? Charisma? A combination of all three? If all three, what do you think is the most important factor.

Persistence.

World is full of over educated paupers and talented nobodies busking on street corners. Essentially, figure out what you're going to do which is best for you and don't give up.
Sure you might fail, it just means you get up and keep going until you either get sent out feet first or succeed, that is the only difference between people who are somebody and the rest of the nobodies.

I wouldn't say 'luck doesn't exist' either, if an Opportunity presents itself then you really should capitalise on it for all its worth. Misfortune is much the same, you need to learn from it to avoid it happening again or at least minimise the damage if it does.

This - if you're healthy, and practise a lot from an early age with people as passionate as you are, then you're "talented". This is pretty much it.

It is a lot of factors - but as stated, persistence is amongst the most important -- as well as getting past a fear of failure/success and being able to stand your ground when others do not share your views.

Also, negative people can be the most draining thing -- especially amongst a close social group and/or partner. Drop the dead weight, that distracts you from your goals. If you surround yourself with individuals who are goal-oriented and 'smarter' than you then you will grow.

I've dealt with a lot of stuff over the years TA that I NEVER predicted... that frankly, had I known from Day 1, I probably wouldn't of had the drive to bother. One especially was pretty disheartening...when someone went out of their way to try to shut me down (cuz of MP3) only to have an event over 5 years later that was primarily attended by 20+ TranceAddicts (because nobody else cared about them by that point).

Eventually you learn not to take things personally since you can only control your own actions... wasting your time on the ignorant only sets you back. As an example, part of the strength of TA is it's lack of a massive list of 'rules'... but it's also part of it's weakness. You see, some people take too far (in the c0r) and go out of their way to be mean... some stuff is s 'n giggles (if you're part of the 'clique') but otherwise it can be a pretty unwelcoming environment. Sure, survival of the fittest, I get it, but don't complain about the c0r not being as busy as years ago when you chase away every new member who posts here accusing them of being an alt.

In closing, the story of Les Brown is great... you gotta be hungry... and go after what you want. :)
