And it's this sort of backhanded benevolence that earns atheists so much ire. Far more beneficial? Tell that to the people who spend their entire lives in slums and ghettos. For some of them their religion is all they have going for them. The last thing you want is nihilistic individuals with zero opportunity. Whether religion is accurate or inaccurate, at the very least it provides hope for some people. The irony of atheists trying to convert religious folk is hilarious.
Worldwide atheism isn't going to bring about world peace. Human beings will always find another basis for belittling others, be it race, geography, financial status... |
Atheist from the ghetto here and I see your point. |

You realize this is exactly what Marx was talking about when he said religion is the opiate of the masses right? Why is it good to teach people that there is anything more than the current life they have now? If religion is the only thing they have then the only thing g they have is false hope, a false hope that suppresses the masses and prevents large groups of people from bettering their lives or their decendents lives. |

Lenin said it best in 1905:
" Those who toil and live in want all their lives are taught by religion to be submissive and patient while here on earth, and to take comfort in the hope of a heavenly reward. But those who live by the labour of others are taught by religion to practise charity while on earth, thus offering them a very cheap way of justifying their entire existence as exploiters and selling them at a moderate price tickets to well-being in heaven." |

Except that atheism advances an agenda that is far more beneficial to the human race and belittling people that continue to place their fate and the rest of the world's fate in fairy tales is a good thing. |

Because there's far more to it than just false hopes.
A common group that subscribes to the same religion assume they follow the same rules, which can be useful in distressing environments, and so on.
Of course, in an ideal world this wouldn't be necessary, as there are religious followers who are about as trustworthy as a car salesman (proving the whole point moot), but in real life it provides believers all kinds of benefits, from enhanced psychological well-being to a tight-knit group of horny bitches and hoes (if you've ever been part of a religious youth club).
The existence of the latter has always amused me. |

Yes, actually. Birth control is one of the only short term cures for poverty, and further, the social advancement of over half of our species. One religion in particular has targeted contraception as not only something of no mention in its holy book, yet something it wants to take an extremely harmful stance on, despite its capability to do otherwise and alleviate the suffering of hundreds of millions in a single generation. |
