Marquee was exclusively a VIP/bottle joint. However, it hast been cool or on top for years. 5 years ago it was like Provocateur, just with tier music. For the last several years its been b&t trash.
The people who run Marquee wanted to take the club to the next level in Vegas. They saw that the VIP bottle business model has a short shelf life and wanted to expand their brand into the super club level without loosing their VIP roots. In order to do this you have to be musically driven. So they compromised and made it a mixture of VIP and GA. The VIP still allows for the exclusiveness and pays a chunk or the clubs bills. The GA crowd locks in revenue with ticket sales and an energetic crowd. And they started to book big talent.
I think they want to replicate this in NYC. The NYC crowd is different from Vegas though. I sounds like sleepy and boo will be running Friday nights with more underground bookings. I'm guessing Saturday nights will be more mainstream.
If you get rejected from a good club for dress code you need to get some better style. You don't need to wear dress shoes and a button down to get in, in fact that might even hurt your chances.
