I was excited about the thread title before I opened it.
At least the thread itself might end up being entertaining. |

Been a while, eh? Let's see if we can get other vintage TAs to drop in. |

Hey boys...hope you had a good weekend.
Do you notice how you clowns keep saying the book is wrong but you can't actually explain why it's wrong?
Also to make such a broad sweeping statement, that every sum of information in the book is wrong, clearly shows you have some personal sentiment towards the publication of the book, without even pointing out what is wrong.
I suspect the entire thing is over jealousy. Ishkur for example, maybe you've been working on putting your online guide in print, but haven't been able to find the time. And maybe also, my book contrasts your view in your guide, what "Trance" actually means. This may create an unsettled feeling in your stomach considering you've put yourself out there in your guide, with your own theories on what Trance actually is, but all these years could have been flat out wrong.
Also note Ishkur that the book references your guide in it. Your 'personal attacks' at trying to make me look unqualified without explaining yourself makes you look like even worse, and someone who probably wasn't there, or someone who was there but MAY be misinformed.
I will repeat. TRANCE DOES NOT COME FROM DETROIT TECHNO. In all my time I have never met a Techno purist that would even consider the notion that Detroit has anything to do with the term Trance.
Let the debate continue. Do you guys actually have anything based on fact? |

No. Do your own damn research. |

I think the onus is on the one trying to pass their writing off as worthy of academic consideration. That is why you have your thesis defence. It is up to you to support your arguments, not the other way around. The lack of sources even if it were anecdotal and based on people around at the time , which is not too bad if that is all you have , would be better than this.
The book is too short to actually deal with just plain definitions and concepts needed to talk about the topic and since there is no invocation of other literature, well it is kinda rubbish. |

You know what really helps sales and marketing for your book about trance music? ....coming onto a trance forum and insulting everyone there. That'll get you some sales.

No.
Reading about music is like dancing about architecture.

I am not wrong. I have the emails from Mark Reeder to prove it.

That makes your book look actually worse.

But you are unqualified.
Should I explain why? What would be the point? You aren't interested in anyone elses opinion and none of us have the time to sit down and spend hours hammering away at our keyboards nitpicking your tome to death.
Instead of being all defensive and counter-accusatory, how about you shut up, read some threads, and learn some things. This forum has been around for 15 years. There are a lot of very smart people here who have been involved in the scene for a very long time, some of them in a very intimate capacity, and they have massive amounts of personal experience and knowledge to impart if you'd just pay attention instead of dismissing them as haters.
I don't know if you did any of that before you wrote your book, but you should have. For several years. It helps to get some perspective.

No one said it did. It didn't come from acid house either.

Alright, here's just what's wrong with the first page:
| quote: | "Electronic Dance Music (EDM) refers to dance music that was produced electronically. It is a broad generic term created in the early 2000s"
|
First of all, why the tensing error in the first sentence? Did you even think to pass this thing along to an editor first? These are mistakes that you shouldn't be making in Grade 8 English.
Secondly, do you even know where the term "EDM" specifically came from and how? I'll give you a hint: You're looking at it. Yes, EDM was first coined and used by TAs over 10 years ago to refer to music that trance DJs played that couldn't realistically be called trance anymore. It was mostly an internal term and it did not refer to any genres that trance DJs didn't play (ie: techno, jungle, breaks, dubstep, etc.).
Do you know how the term got off this site and into the mainstream? ...probably because of Toronto native and TA regular Joel Zimmerman (this is a Toronto-based site), who used it in interviews all the time. The media picked up on it and the term stuck, and now its used to refer to all music produced electronically.
| quote: | "House music (including all its subgenres) is the first and largest genre of EDM"
|
I don't even know how you would qualify this, but it's wrong. Hip hop is older and larger. And EBM, Italo, Dub, Electro, Hi NRG, R&B, Funk, Garage, Soul, New Age, Spacesynth, Synthpop, Freestyle and Techno all predate House.
| quote: | "The reality is, the main reason that it is catching on is because the general population by now is completely familiar with the House 4/4 beat."
|
The 4/4 beat is the basis of all western music and has been around for literally hundreds of years! That you would make such a statement displays not just an appalling level of ignorance regarding music trends and demographics, but also toward music theory and history.
| quote: | "Trance House is a style (subgenre) of House music that originated from the Chicago House scene of 1986"
|
Trance House did not come from Chicago House. In fact, I think you just made that up because that's the first time I've even heard of it. You later say that it is a pseudonym for Progressive House, and if that's the case, fine, but no one called it Trance House and Progressive House still did not come from Chicago House at any rate. It came from the UK and seven years later.
Have you even heard of Genesis P'Orridge?
| quote: | "Progressive Trance is a misleading term that applies to a false subgenre."
|
You think Progressive Trance doesn't exist? ....oh my.
Question: Have you even been to Discogs before?
| quote: | "The nickname Trance, since 1986 has been a description of certain sounds in House"
|
Trance did not come from House. It has almost nothing to do with House and has a completely separate musical lineage.
| quote: | "In the 1986 period, the term Trance was applied to tracks like Virgo - Free Yourself"
|
That track is Deep House, dumbass.
| quote: | "and Master C & J - When You Hold Me"
|
Chicago House. Not a remotely trance-thing about it. Do you even know what trance is? Have you heard of MFS records?
| quote: | "Another misconception in the dance scenes is that the word 'progressive' alone, refers to its own genre of music."
|
Not only is Prog its own genre, but is in fact its own SCENE: A family of genres descended from Progressive House, typically emerging as its own identity due to Digweed's Bedrock efforts in the late 90s.
Some other things that you got wrong:
Trance is not historically older than Techno. Techno came from Detroit in the early 80s. Trance came from Germany in the late 80s.
Trouse as a thing is, like, seriously, ONLY THREE YEARS OLD. Stop calling Chicago acid records from the 80s Trouse (or your made up term: Trance House). Or anything from the 90s. There was no Trouse back then. There was no Trance House. There was a Progressive House but it had nothing to do with Trance or Chicago House or anything else.
I don't want to go through any more. There is crap on every line that I cringe at. It is written like a stream-of-conscious blog with no filter controls and no cohesion. There are middle school grammar errors and spelling mistakes everywhere (and even smiley faces...and you used the word "noobs" -- that's not a ing word. This is a book you retard, not a chat room). The language usage is shallow and immature. Half of it is incoherent ramblings about market potential and industry reach like its a business seminar, and the other half is a schizophrenic personal memoir with way too much pointless asides and passive voice.
And then you make ridiculous statements like "In my generation (1990s) of the dance scene, young Canadians rarely had any potential to become anything of themselves." What the does this even mean and what the are you talking about?
I would like you to take this thing offline. You simply do not know what you are talking about and you don't have the grammatical acuity to explicate it in a cohesive manner anyway. So just stop what you're doing and go away. You're doing more harm than good. |

| SYSTEM-J |
| I actually suspect he got "Trance House" from your Guide - I remember it being the jokey alternative name for progressive house - and then conflated your usage with Tiesto and Dekay's coinage of "Trouse" about 8 years later. |
