Completely agree about the gritty feel of Detroit and, while it certainly isn't a beach front vacation destination, it's rich history, techno roots, and unfortunate tailspin all tie into the unique vibe that weekend.

Disagree about the afterparties. True, the festival is the main event, but the afterparties can be amazing, too. Elysium was good (too bad it closed), but I look forward to City Club the most of any repeat yearly destination, club wise. Dark, dirty, and scary in all the right ways, haha.... TV Bar is an experience as well, and Old Miami is an awesome backyard shindig. The lack of glitz and glamour at all the venues just gives me that feeling that this is what dance music is supposed to be, ya know. The one very unfortunate thing, though, is that the last few years everything has started to feel a little more Miami-like as far as overcrowding and whatnot. The increased popularity of the festival and music has boosted afterparty attendance by, what seems like, ten fold. You used to be able to enter any party without much, if any, of a line and have plenty of dance floor space to yourself. That is no longer the case.

hey guys thought i would post this question in here since it seems to be the most active one, i am plan on going to demf this upcoming year, its going to be my first time to a major festival i did the calculations and everything including round trip flight plus hotel and a vip ticket will cost me roughly 1355 dollars, not going to include the spending money, just want to know if its really worth it going to this festival alone, and how are all the sights and sounds around detroit for that matter? i am more than stoked for the acts, but just trying to justify the cost as i never took a big leap like this before.

$1300+?? WTF! lol for a trip to detroit, that's just unheard of. unless, you're flying business class and staying in the presidential suite at the ren cen (the marriot right across the street from the festival). But, just to put things into prespective, from all the years that i've gone, i don't think i've ever spent more than $800-900 tbh. and half of that came from airfare and hotel.
idk if you plan to come alone or with some friends but if alone or a friend, you can always link up with someone on here that has space available in their hotel- there's always people looking for those who need rooms last minute.
now, i find detroit to be a beautiful broken down city. there's isn't "much" to see but it's rich with history and the buildings each tell a story of their own. i'm sure you've heard how bad it can be and whatnot but honestly i've walked the streets wayyy late at night from a club back to the hotel and never had an issue or run into any problems- i guess you can call me lucky. but the people from there are sooo warm, loving and inviting.. i really enjoy being around them.
anyways, it's really not that expensive to go out and eat- there really aren't that many areas other than greektown. something i've always wanted to do though that i haven't is attend a baseball game- i'm pretty sure that would be a blast, since the stadium is literally right there as well.
so yea, check to see where you're spending a lot and see how you can cut that down. cheers!

Now, I've done the drive there (twice) but would drop the car off once there and take a plane back. But, just curious, have you ever taken the train there or will this be your first time? Also, how much is it and how long does it take? Have never looked into that way of commute.
Pantone199c
Why a train? You barely save any money and your stuck on a train for up to 12+ hours for something that would be a little under $300 for a flight which would be at least half the travel time or less.

It's no wonder Amtrak doesn't get much revenue. Why should I pay the same price (sometimes more) than a flight.
CarS
jk, sorry.
Detroit does not have train service, Amtrak takes you there by bus from the main line to Chicago.
nvr done.
MCSt. is just big on ruin-porn sites, thats all, check it out...

pantone is right of course, only DC-NY-Boston excepted, and there bus beats Amtrak on price too of course (Bolt, etc)

Is there any kind of cheap transport from the airport to downtown?

I haven't found much about it online.

Was going to book a hotel with a shuttle, but I bought a VIP ticket and I'm waiting for the rooms to get released.

There is no other way to get to downtown other than a cab. So, keep your eyes peeled for "demfers" and split the cab with them- the experience will be one to cherish for a lifetime, trust me! Because I'm sure you won't want to pay $50+ for it yourself.

Also, may sound crazy/stupid but a friend that stayed with us last year rented a car from the airport. By the end of the trip it sounded like something I would start looking into. He must of paid like a little over $100 for the 3 days (some little prius or something like that). After calculating cabs and such, it turned out like a good investment. So, that's another option to look into.

Thanks for the info!

I guess that's a good thing for the cabbies; I'm sure the business is welcome.

But com'on Detroit. Public transportation from an airport to downtown (not even considering Movement is in that area) is pretty standard these days :o

^^^
no money.
public transport is always a subsidy offering, and the town has little enough for the other services it can't finance.

besides, hardly anyone living in downtown can afford to fly much, and the locals around Detroit that can and do don't go downtown from airport either.

their symphony is/was in bankruptcy.
their museum is deaccessioning to make ends meet
and they're just the start
OrangestO
Yea, I get it. I know all about the city's downward economic spiral and history.

I had a moment of selfishness :o
