| I'm going to Amsterdam next semester from January to July doing a study abroad program. I'm so nervous b/c i have no idea what to expect. All of my courses are in English, but should I take some Dutch classes anyways? I also have no idea what places are nice to live in. I could use any help :) |

Great point here Arbiter...
For me, I'd likely be happy in any place where it was rainy, with little snow, and the government leaned toward socialist policy, but someone else could have a 180 viewpoint on that...this is really too subjective to talk logically about in any sort of universal sense. |

i'll be one of the sole people to give a solid single-vote to the USA, and not just for pointless patriotism, i'll give reasons :)
I'm a well-traveled man, (been to most of europe and south america, even parts of the middle-east and africa), and i've seen how a lot of places are, how people are, etc.
Granted, the USA doesn't have the nicest people (that award has to go to Denmark and British Columbia, Canada, believe it or not), and true, the US doesn't have the best "club culture", but as far as everything else goes, we are set.
I think its safe to say that out of all the afore-mentioned countries, you would have the greatest opportunity to succeed financially in the USA... combine that with the strongest economy for the longest amount of time of all the countries mentioned, and the plethora of differnt businesses spawning from this country of mine, and you have one big melting pot. Most countries specialize in certain areas - but not the USA - we make just about anything (maybe not the best at making it, but we make it!)
How about climate/geography? we have places that vary COMPLETELY... we have sandy deserts with huge mounds reminiscent of the sahara, we have beautiful mountainous ranges with snow caps in colorado, we have glacier parks, caverns, grand canyons, smoky mountains, volcanos, resort islands and peninsulas, huge ports, and 4 of the ten largest cities in the world...
Of all the countries in the world we have the largest diversity of ethnic groups (thanks to our history), and of all countries in the world, our country has the most number of languages spoken in it (even though english is the lingua-franca).... And although our government may not please everyone, technically whatever they do in washington isn't going to affect you on a day-to-day basis, so you really have nothing to complain about.
You are protected by one of the largest military mights in the world, and save for the terrorist attack here or there, its pretty much a safe place to live. (that not being able to leave your house at 12 a.m. is not true - i dont know where you live! - thats only in the HUGE cities like NYC and LA...)
your dollar goes farther - we can buy nicer cars for less and gasoline and insurance costs less over here - hence kids in high school driving M3's and the like...
anyway, you get the idea. True, we don't have "legalized drugs", but that doesn't stop anyone from doing them anyway. and the US has its nice people as well, they are in certain areas... its not really fair to say that one country is "all nice people" and another is all "a-holes".... it really comes down to geographic location.... the US has many of places of geniunely nice people, but of course all you ever hear about is the nasty New Yorkers, or the L.A. gangbangers...
Honestly though, most likely there isn't one thing you can name that your country has and the USA doesn't (and you can't say popularity! :p ), b/c the USA is the sum of all its parts! - YOU!
(and on a side note - Maaz, even if you were a xenophobe, move to ft. lauderdale, FL..... thousands upon thousands of brazilians there - they have "colonized" so to speak, and they have complete sections of town there... look into it ;) )

Thanks for the invitation, mate, I'll look forward to it :) Just one point: I'm a student of foreign affairs whose former girlfriends are mostly from other countries. Therefore, I don't think I could be a xenophobe, don't worry :) In fact, I'd probably go for xenophilia if there were such thing :D |

Ok it's not so late as my last bit, so i'll explain why the uk sucks
Basically the economy and infrastructure in the uk is bad, healthcare is almost 3rd world, you get cockups in organ donations, crime in hospitals against nurses & doctors and a lot of it depends on if u got money, if u dont which most dont, then end up on long 4 year waiting lists for stuff u could have done the next day if u had a few grand spare.
The government is giving lots of money to illegal immigrants who get over so easily whilst leaving war vetrans & pensioners struggling to pay bills and that is really wrong.
Racism is still bad, but also to white people now, in the way that jobs are given to those of asian or black desent when maybe they're not the best qualified, but it's done to make the companies look multicultiral but it fails in that purpose, as it should be the best person for the job, regardless of race.
Crime, mainly violent stuff, rapes, burglaries, drug releated is on the rise like really bad, lots of gang wars go on in cities, almost like bits of the usa in their ferocity and it's no longer safe to go out alone @ night which in a 'free' world it should be.
No Justice.. murderers, rapists etc get off easily, young offenders get a smack on the hands for beating a granny to a pulp, imo there needs to be stricter sentancing or even death penalties to those found guilty of murders or sexual offences against women or men.
Prices.. Everything is maybe 25% again on top of what europe/usa pay for stuff, its a joke, and we're being hit in the pocket.
Elitism.. upper class people still think they rule the roost, the royal family does all but drain taxpayers money and it's wrong
I love my country because I am patrotic, but I can't say I Like it |

Canada is so great ! yeah right, it leaves alot to be desired.
Everyone thinks that their country is so great and the best place to live (especially Australians). Thats just cause its been pushed into your head since you were a small kid. I have been to quite a few of the richer nations around the world. I have come to conclude that every country is better for some and worse for others. Its all about what your ideals are and what sort of things you want out of life.
One thing that you notice is that people are so patriotic about their country. Do they ever stop to think about why?
Think about it and see what reasons you come up with. You might be surprised. |
