Here a few things I learned:
1. There is a fat gymnast and surprise surprise she's Mexican.

2. The first black I've ever seen swimming in a pool and she medaled.

3. Horses compete in the Olympics and no I'm not talking about womens rugby. I can't fathom how a jockey is considered an athlete. What's next horse racing?

Anthony Ervin (winner of 50 freestyle and thus the oldest individual gold winner in Olympic swimming history) is also part black.

Actually the women's water polo goalie is 100% black and is top notch. I'm joking of course but being a swimmer I can't help but notice the disparity both at the recreational and pro level. Must be a cultural thing.

To add to my list:

4. A lot of the events had a low turn out by locals. I'm not sure if they were priced out or lack of enthusiasm.

The green water was caused by the Brazilian putting into the water hydrogen peroxide instead of chlorine. Almost as embarrassing as Lochte. :o

Lira: Btw speaking about embarrassing is Germany going to massacre you again?

I haven't watched any of the matches, but I doubt it will be anywhere near as one-sided. Not a single player in either Olympic squad played in that infamous match, and the German side is relatively weak as the German league begins very soon and most of the clubs wouldn't release senior players for the Olympics. Brazil also have Neymar who is by some considerable distance the best footballer at the Olympics, as well as the home crowd, so they are probably slightly favourites.

Of course, Brazil have never won gold at the Olympics at football and are slightly obsessed with doing so, so they're the ones under more pressure.

That's good to know. Hope they show the game here. The coverage on broadcast tv has been highly edited with events with Americans in contention only shown and higher profile events such as basketball and tennis were only on paid cable stations.

Most of pro sports the top athletes don't participate for similar reasons. Men basketball team many of the top players didn't come, golf too.

In 1900 ! there was also Long Jump and High Jump.
The horses are considered athletes so it's always a combination with the rider.
It's the only event were male and female are mixed.

It's really ing annoying; in the first few days, major sports were being ignored for little known events that the US were doing well in. Who gives a about women's 7's rugby or Air rifles?

This however is a thing of beauty: Japan did so damn well but that last leg is like watching a superhero compete against fleas

Usain Bolt completes the triple triple. Holy cow. This will never happen ever again

He's obviously the greatest, I just can't understand why he keeps saying it. On that part our Churandy Martina is an amazing example for other athletes, always happy, always positive, always proud. He ran his third Olympic 200m final together with Bolt and might give it another try in Tokyo.

Yeah the Japanese taking silver was impressive.

Lightning strikes three times in the same place!
