This was my first WEMF so I had nothing to compare it against. We used to goto other events, but we figured we would give WEMF a try this year.
So here goes. Rating are based on 5 stars, 5 being highest.
Venue: The venue gets 2 stars. It would have gotten 1 star, but I am giving the second star to the Tribe room. I will explain in a moment. First off, as others have said, it was too bloody hot. The main room must have been 120 degrees, the psy room, at least 130. It was a damn sauna. The decorations and light displays were non existant. They main room showed minimal effort with some light brite displays 6X6 incles in size directed ot the walls, and some cheesed out balloons littering the ceiling. They could have at least centered the stage. I was waiting for someone to loose an arm or a hand on the 1920's fan setup they had at the enterance to the main room, there was an exposed drive belt that ran the contraption calling for a drunk or high raver to inadvertantly walk into it on their way out to the patio in effort to escape the sauna. The Tribe room, consisting of literally a hotle room, was the only dancably climatic place in the venue. Albiet you could only fit 20-30 people in the "living room", the temperature was acceptable and the DJ's roxored mah soxors. "Brain" tore up the tables 2-4 am sunday morning. Phenominal Trance Core set. Im not reviewing any other DJ's because i didnt catch their entire sets due to the heat in the venue and a review would not be fair.
Camping: 3 stars. Why? Well set aside the "Junkyard Wars" look of it, there was an explaination. The cars in the "boneyard" are the reminants of a different yearly even the park hosts. A couple residents of the park told us that they were actually glad to have WEMF, and that the "ravers" they had spoken to were good people. Good job all! It was nice to be able to camp on site. It was nice to be able to have fires. It was bad to walk at night without a flashlight. We camped with the "Girls Gone Wild Crew", which was amusing in itself. We were the sausagest crew on the grounds :).
Security: 4 stars. The OPP seemed to be more content having fun on their 4 wheelers than harrassing the party goers. Security was very lax. The OPP stopped by our camp for 2 minutes to haggle us for intel (wanted to know what drug people were on because they were seing "alot of people that had no pupils". The guys/gals in our crew humored them by giving them a "Girls Gone Wild" guest pass, and took a picture of them in front of the banner. They didnt bother us the rest of the weekend. So, Thumbs up on the security. They were around enough to show presence, but not enough to become annoying. Security looses a star due to the tickets they issued to people caught walking the camp roads with open beers.
Outside Events: 5 stars. Thank you Nightmare for your open air sets. A great alternative for those that didnt want to die of heat exhaustion in the venue. Chris Liberator pulled off a suprise set early Sunday morning, sick beats. I was tired, but ended up sticking around and dancing my ass of to his set at 7 am. There was nothing like hearing some hard beats echoing throughout the woods in the 3 am darkness. I was however prepared to find and beat the guy with the fake police siren. Two thumbs up.
Side notes: The 2 way radios were starting to get annoying after day one. Beep, Beep Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep. Argh.
The little bit of rain we had was tolerable, and kept the temperatures cool.
I didnt catch several Dj's I wanted to because of lines into the venue, and the untolerable heat. Bummer.
Whoever the guy was over by the TA camp shouting racist remarks at about 6 am sunday morning, your crew should have bitch slapped you. I dont think it was anyone in the TA crew, but someone close them.

Worst WEMF ever. worst weekend ever. worst music I have ever heard. Main stage? where was the trance? Cor Fijneman=terrble, BT was nothing special(where was the live PA?), Orikdea was the only dj I liked. "If" there was a highlight of wemf it would have been when Orikdea played Three drives on a vinyl-greece 2000. I had to pay the bouncer 20$ to get in Saturday night. I honestly can't stand Jungle and drum n bass, this type of music has to be worst music in the world. I would rather listen to anything else. My friends and I had to listen to Jungle 24/7. People were either spining jungle in the camping area or playing Jungle in their car steros. I felt like taking a bat and smashing their car up. This was my 3rd wemf in a row and I have to say it was the worst one by far. BIggest waste of money and time of my life. I will never attend another WEMF ever. I don't totally blame destiny for this. I realize they were screwed with the hole bobcaygen crap.
I give it a 1/10 and im being nice. |
There was alot of trance. not to mention that psy had its own room. aside from that nightmare had put on some trance-core style sets, there were some trance sets in the tribe room (dj brain did a hard trance/trance core set that was absolutely amazing), and I caught a hard trance set in the main room friday night. Dont remember who it was. I was just passing through on the way out to the patio to catch some air.
man, its all what you make of it, it seems like you had a bit of a bad come down while wrtiting your review :(. You should have stopped by some of the outdoor sets.... |

Great reviews everyone!
Good to hear that mostly everyone had a good time! I sure did.
Just wondering when the pics are coming in, or if there are already some here, where can I find them? |

We were with the "GGW Crew" and they took tons of pics. I just spoke to some of the guys and they will have their pics available in the next few days and posted on their site. You can find them at the Unofficial WEMF review homepage.

Yeah it sucked big time... at least for me.
I would have said something but it was sorta hard since I didn't know who the hell I'd be yelling at!
"BETTER PLANNING TO MEET" right on man, seriously...
See my group (5 People) we'rnt in a car and we have packed a whole lot of food, snacks, the works! It was heavy as hell... I'm still soar!
I'm pretty sure this could have been a 110% better experience for me but whatever. |

Yeah, The Aponauts are really good!
But Alex, who was that dapper gentleman who was taking pictures of you guys while you were playing? And aren't you worried that your girlfriends and sisters might run off with him? |

This was my 4th WEMF in a row, and I almost didn't make it there, but I'm sure glad I did. I was a little skeptical about the the whole thing after last year.
First off, I'm so glad I met some you TA's. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have had as good of a time. I didn't know a single person there until I met some of you, and it made me wish I still lived in Toronto so I could party with you more. Mike, you can party! and it was great that you could feed of my vobe, like I could feed off yours!
Arrived Friday night to see Jon the Dentist for my 8th time, and I think that his set this year was the best I've heard him! Yes, even better than his set in 2001!
Missed Cor, Orkidea, and Chris Liberator because I passed out form heat exhaustion! Sorry to you too Mike for not being able to hear your set.
I made it back actually to hear the last 2 tracks from Cor, and they sounded pretty amazing.
BT was really awesome, aside from hearing him up a few times when the breaks ended and the tracks kicked back into full gear. BT didn't end with Flaming June, he came in with Godspeed right after. I lost my ing head when I heard it come in. What a beautiful song!
Lost Witness, MAN, I thought that was a stellar set, one of the best of the night actually! I found his set to be a little more mellow, perfect for that time of the morning, just like Lange and Pulser last year, but maybe not quite as good.
DJ Rap, well, my future wife ed up a few times, but no one seemed to mind. How intense was the jungle she playing, wow! I think she may have drew the biggest crowd. DAMN, what a hottie!
OS/2, finally good to hear you play again. That second track you threw down had me all the way. Best song I heard all night, wish I knew what it was. Loved Members of Mayday too.
I'd have to say that this WEMF was definately one of the "hardest" sounding WEMF's I've been too. Everytime I walked into a room, the tunes were just bangin'! The sound was quite amazing in every room!
Again, thanks for the good time to all you TA's. Your all really nice people who love their music and party's. If anyone ever makes it out to Whistler, you better look me up!
Final Opinion of WEMF - Because of the people... 5/5 |
