Why is Toronto trance scene so different from Montreal and Europe ??

What do you think?

When you come to trance parties in Toronto a few things are evident:
1) Asian crowd is dominant
2) Women - well, there aren't a lot of them

I guess the reason why there aren't so many Asians at parties anywhere else is because there aren't many Asians living there, but why is Asian crowd dominating at Trance parties in Toronto? And why aren't girls interested in Trance in Toronto?

I'm sure there are other differences, feel free to discuss them as well.. or to completely contradict my post if you wish.

I think one problem is that Viva is out in the middle of nowhere.

They really need to find a solid location closer to Finch, or even downtown.

If you are just some chick looking for a night out, are you gonna go to the clubs downtown, or the trance club up in Markham that costs $20 each way for cab?

I don't think that he was specifically referring to Viva (correct me if I'm wrong though).

To me it's simple really. The same answer applies to both points, which is that trance isn't mainstream here like it is in Europe. Over there it's part of the normal lifestyle, it's on TV and on the radio; over here everybody's busy with their top 40 crap.

Asians haven't assimilated into the Top 40 melting pot as readily - since there is such a large first- and second-generation Asian population in Toronto, theirs is a more distinctive culture than the European-immigrated individuals or tiny communities.

That's all there is to it - top 40 culture. There is one other thing which I'm sure a lot of people who haven't been outside Toronto won't understand, but in this city there is sort of an anti-social atmosphere, people are - I'm sorry to say it - stuck up. They just aren't as friendly (especially with strangers) as the people in Mtl or Europe, so clubbing isn't really a social experience; people either go out for the music specifically or they go to pick up, we don't really have the in-between fun-loving mentality that exists in other places.

Well there's not that many girls at the parties in Montreal either. But the reason why the scene is different here, compared to Europe, is because:
1. Alot of parties here aren't dress code... in the UK and Holland... most of the places to go there are super dress code. (which is a good thing for us!!!)
2. Most of the big name DJ's are from Countries in Europe.
3. Not everyone speaks English... and music with no vocals is alot more universal to Europians.
4. WE IN CANADA CAN DANCE ALOT BETTER!!!
5. There's alot more money put in to the scene there then there is here.
6. As long as the radio's and TV music station's force feed the public bull music to everyone here, it'll just be that much harder for the scene to grow here.
7. You can hardly find what your looking for in the local music stores here, and if you can find everything, the price for it is really high, since it's imported.

There's things that are different about the Canada compared to Europe some are good and some are bad... either way I think it's not to bad here, but it could be better.

ah the age old question arises again ..

wells all i'm gonna say is that a lotta Asians don't hit parties purely for trance, there are other aspects of the scene that draw them there .. btw. the trance scene in Asia & Australia is actually bigger than it is in North America. Infact it's probably the next biggest market next to Europe.

as for the girls thing .. i dunno maybe you should all ask girls who don't listen to trance why they don't to get a better answer..

bottom line is that it's different because the scene is more commercial over here imho. i dunno about MTL since i've never partied there..

the asian crowd is dominant in toront cuz we have a major asian population here in Toronto compared to the rest of Europe. from my experience backpacking through europe, the asian population there is minimal or non-existent. i got tons of stares and gawks while travelling, it was as if many europeans have never seen an asian girl before!

but back to the topic, i agree with desidel that many asians don't hit the parties for purely trance. no offence but many go there to get trashed and as an escape from everyday life .. just like some of us as well. but to me, it's just scary how much older some of them are. but then again, if you were a new immigrant to canada and not fitting in that well with canadian life, then wouldn't you want to go out every weekend to party? and forget some of your troubles for one nite? and music has no language barriers, especially electronic music - it speaks to people of all nationalities and since asians are a dominant nationality here in toronto, it makes sense that there is a large asian presence at clubs.

anyhoo, moving on, i agree with diginut, electronic music in general isn't very mainstream here in north america yet (maybe it will never be!). we turn on the radio and we hear the top 40 or 'pop' music. in england, you can tune into many different radio stations like kiss 100 and hear various types of electronic music ranging from trance to prog to whatever! in general, electronic music in europe is more mainstream and it's easier and cheaper to buy electronic music and not go flat broke.

as for girls and trance .. i don't know cuz i'm not one of them .. i love trance, and i love all forms of electronic music. but again, it's not mainstream here so it's harder to get people in general to listen to it.

that's my .02 cents!

cheers.

really ... ? maybe it's more obvious in rural parts of Europe, but i'd think in major urban areas like London or Paris that it's quite commonplace. Anyhow, i'm gonna definately check it out next summer when i go ..

btw. i didn't know that you were asian either, that makes like what 2 asian girls on TOTA now ? lol.. it's like a cultural revolution ! :toothless

there are definitely more girls at parties in montreal than in ottawa/toronto. And so many are ing HOT. So funny haha people on here talking about asians like its a bad thing. Anyway i didnt mind the vibe at the guv when i was there the last two times. dont know about viva though.

Trance ownz me:)

We here in Toronto dont have the greatest Trance scene but i dont think many cities in North America do...We will never be like Europe so its pointless to compare ourselves to them.....

Instead of saying why dont we have a European Trance scene, we should be thinking how lucky we are to have a growing "electronic" scene where all genres of the music are growing at a fanatic pace. Some really talented DJ's already exist here (Mark Oliver, Max Graham, Deko-ze, Addy and many others) and theres new ones gaining world recognition very quickly (Luke Fair and others)..Granted some of you may not like the music these guys spin while others do, but all of us have to sit back and recognize their skill behind the decks and be proud of the scene that we have not only in Toronto but all of Canada...

W00t>>>>>:)

as for Asians...tru the older ones who are all spazzed out are just meh but jasmyn brought up a good point when she spoke of the music as one language that needs no barriers. Accept them as part of the scene...and keep your eyes open cuz the ones who aint spazzed out really now how to party.

i hate being intellectual in the morning.:)

Well, I wasn't really saying that Toronto scene is any worse than European.. I was merely questioning why is it so different?

It's my turn to answer my own question, and IMHO the main reason for differences is... drugs.

Yes.. you heard me right. Both in Europe and Montreal drugs are kind of accepted. Everybody does it. It's normal. Come to Montreal and you'll see what I mean. Here in Toronto, they are not. As a result, raves (and as a result trance parties) are perceived as something bad, place which is for sketchy people doing their drug business. Obviously girls don't want go to to such places.
