some rappers are actually the "real" thing(50 cent,Tupac, Jay-Z, even Eminem, but he trys too hard), and i respect them. the people dat are abunch of bull are people like NAS, and Ja Rule, they try to much. |

I think we're forgetting one thing. Hip/hop compared to trance is a much older genre of music. Its had time to permeate the culture and gain a strong foothold in the music world. I'm sure many rap fans were saying the same thing back in the early to mid 80s when MTV and most radio stations were airing glam metal and rock. I think trance (as we know it) is a relatively new genre compared to hip/hop and rap. Who knows..maybe it will become "big" in the future.
I disagree with the part about trance being generally for young clubbers. Just look at most of the super star Djs. Many of them are in their 30s w/ some even in their 40s. Djs like Sasha have fans from the early 90s and I see many "older" clubbers coming to see him whenever he spins locally. |

funny how people here like to bag out the type of trance on mainstream radio, yet will judge other genres based on similar offerings. i don't douby there are high quality musicians out there in hiphop, no idea who though, and i don't think i see too many of them on mtv.
To really get into a certain style of music i think you need some connection with it. The policitical messages often found in rap lyrics hook some people, particularly in the teens and early 20's when you still feel you can change the world, and before you get too cynical (yes, painting people with a very broad brush there). I think trance is a lot harder to find a connection with, no real obvious message. I think most of us find that connection in good nights out with friends, shopping for records, meeting a favourite dj. All of which i think become a much more personal connection due to the smaller size of our clubs for the most part, the effort to track good music down.
whilst i dount i'll ever stop listening to trance (like most people my parents age still like the beatles) tastes will change as you grow older. my tastes are certainly pushing towards more progressive sounds, and i can see that general trend in most clubs. the average age is much higher for prog acts than for hardstyle. |

I am shocked to hear you say that as a Dutch, in America I would expect that to be the mentality since I know the way that trance here is much less popular and less mainstream than in Europe, with that said I like it that way gives you a chance to filter through the Lasgo, Sammy, et.al bull and find quality. If trance was mainstream in America we would have had a bunch of Britney Spears pop type bull that I can't stand. It took me a while to figure out good and bad trance becaue I use to like it all, until the TA board enlightened me to the horrible reality of my actions. Now I avoid the cheese. At any rate I love trance and while I don't care for hip-hop music in any circumstance, to each his own. |

And some parts of the UK it is... more in the midlands/north though I would say. I live in Bristol which is further down south and would generally say that the trance scene was next to non-existant here... and it's quite a large city.
Probably doesn't help that I rarely admit to liking trance though, since so many people turn round and call it , or label me as some kind of drug-addict raver or something, same as with you in Canada. |

Because trance is repetitive, largely instrumental music made on unfamiliar, unaccessible instruments, has an image popularly associated with drug abuse, has an average length of 7 minutes and generally is written to be played on a dancefloor, not on the radio?

I'd beg to differ... if you take something like prog house, it can get a bit repetitive. Try explaining the intricate details of changing drumbeat as the song reaches it's peak - people will give you weird stares and say "uh-hu... wrrrrrrrrriiiiiight" and walk away.
Unaccessible instruments???? Well - all the instruments used in trance have been used by army of other genre musicians. Access Virus is the most popular synth in all areas... What else? 909 and 808 - are used in hiphop, trance, etc. so that doesn't apply (other than the fact that it's a synth - not a guitar).
Drug abuse image - well that's "our own fault". Personally, its a matter of choice. As if rock and roll never had any drug associations... Please. "Sex, drugs, and rock and roll" - heard of it?
Pink Floyd songs for the most part are up there... 7 minutes or longer. Just listen to "Crazy Diamond".... nice 13 mins running time (several parts, etc). (Oh, talk about drug music - Pink Floyd is fo sure up there).
All this crap is nonsense... Tho I must admit, some trance is just and the only ppl we can blame for it are the labels and fans. Labels for putting it out, fans for liking it.
THis whole conversation is somewhat pointless though. PPL will like what they like and you shouldn't expect everyone to jump on a trance bandwagon. Personally, I have a better life not discussing the finer points of Paul Van Dyk's "Connected" with a 40-year old soccer mom.
The part of attraction in trance is it being underground. I love it that way and wanna keep it that way as long as possible. I don't want to educate the masses. I don't need to see "Magik of Tiesto at Wembley - a sold out show!" to be happy. If you need that to feel your taste is justified, by all means DJ Sammy Lasgo DJ Encore have been making nice headway in america's radio - should be enough, no? |

And BTW, trance is more mainstream now. When I started listening to Trance/Techno back in the early 90's I had to hunt down the cd's overseas. No store in US had a comprehensive collection of dance/electronic music. Now - all stores have a "Dance" section... Which include my favorite "Now - that's what I call music" compilations. Or "MTV's hot dance tracks". I just love the captions - latest in dance music and have something like IIO Rupture or Alice DJ crap on it from 5 years ago.
when I see "now that's what I call music" I wanna just put a giant sticker of it in a form of pile of that says "now - that's what I call !"

| I like the way you're suddenly comparing trance to rock, which is popular for very different reasons to hip-hop. My point was that trance isn't designed to be listened to anywhere, it's specifically aimed at the dancefloor, and is hypnotic and repetitive (hence the "trance"). The fact trance is made entirely on black boxes with the odd keyboard thrown in (you never see producers tweaking 303s in their videos do you). Since when was Pink Floyd considered mainstream, or hip-hop? Floyd comes from an era when long music was the norm, witness Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, about 23 minutes long, sold 18 million copies... do you think it would sell that many today? |

There's no trance scene up here as well, not in Manchester anyway. People always go cold on me when I say what I listen to; some take the piss as well.
The fact is most people want listen to trance is because it’s socially un-cool among their peers. |
