Although I generally agree with your sentiment (and the sentiment of the people in this thread) re: Caribana, there is a major fundamental flaw in your argument comparing candy ravers and soccor hooligans to Caribana attendees. The fact is that Caribana is a "cultural event" whereas the events you mentioned are not cultural events. Candy ravers could be black, white, or asian, same with soccer hooligans.
I don't mean to sound like "Mr. Politically Correct." I'm far from it, and I feel that people are free to criticize the event. You just need to be aware of the type of generalizations you are making, and in this case, it involves a specific ethnic culture. |

now to clear one question once and for all. caribana is not about race. here's and example. i'm black and caribana is not my favourite thing, caribana is a west indian celebration, but unfortunately attracts hip hop culture. the thing is that most people that have posted here are not too fond with hip hop culture, including myself.
yes the city does bring out alot of thug wanna be's which sucks. on saturday night i walked on younge street and even i, a black person felt a bit intimidated. no doubt there are lot of idiots that go to caribana but i think you all should think hard before you bring up the topic of race.
like someone mentioned earlier toronto is a multiculural city and within those cultures there are different racial groups so its hard to point the finger at a particular racial group. stop in confusing race with culture, there is a fine line that divides the two and for those that dont know what it is i suggest you go back to primary school. |

Iam glad nothing happend to you,in the last 2 weeks there has been 3 shootings there,and 2 dead people.First accident time a guy pulled his gun out inside the club because he didnt want to leave the club so the he started shooting randomly,while the club is filled with people.Minutes later he got arrested by the cops outside.The second actiden a man shot another man in the club,minutes later he died.When the shooter came out of the club,he got shot himlself by the police on Richmond street and he died shortly after.
Iam surprised that place is still open and running,and still they dont search people for anything.:rolleyes:

let me add another thing. I dont necissarily an aspect of the gay pride festival either only because i dont think we should tolerate guys hanging their schlongs out for little kids to see. I definitely don't think it's cool for some clown to be naked in the street, particularly with families in attnedence. Gay pride is about celebrating diversity and tolerance. I fail to see how getting naked in the street is a celebration of anything other than exhibitionism and it has no place in Pride, IMHO.

I'm curious about that too...I've read the 300 million stat, which is absolutely phenomenal! The various levels of gov't spent a million on Caribana, but seems like a worthwhile investment to me. It would be interesting to see if there is much $$$ lost in other areas...but I honestly can't see there being anything near enough to offset the gains.

often, that is true...but by the same token, one could say that some Caribana supporters fail to acknowledge that a bad element does exist during Caribana that doesn't exist at other festivals. Personally, I feel the organizers ought to take some responsibility for that and work to remove that element, or at least make them feel unwelcome. There's no magic solution, of course...but doesn't anyone have a problem with the entire police force having to be mobilized across the city for this event? You don't see that for ANY other event or festival in Toronto.

ABSOLUTELY! A small thug element blown up by the media gives the festival a bad reputation. I think it's also less of a "black" thing than an AMERICAN thing. The gangsta, pimpin', gun-toting image is not a black one (in Toronto) so much as an American one. I live downtown...I don't worry for my safety anywhere I go...but cruising by the Phoenix on my way home, yeah, I was concerned. Not because there were hundreds of black people on the street...but because I know a huge number of those people were from the U.S. and don't respect the fact that they are visitors to our city.
There is plenty that isn't reported to the media...I know someone who was bashed pretty bad during one year's Caribana weekend...a little, waify gay guy was beaten in his own apt lobby by three guys up from the U.S. No news company is going to rush to cover that "irrelevant" story. Is this a knock against Caribana the fesitval? No, of course not. It's a knock against the thug element that unfortunately accompanies it.

I think it is really petty to bring this up- i'm disapointed w/ you both ilya and christina! As someone who has health problems due to past ED's i find it apalling that ppl would complain about this.
whrn i see ppl who are confident w/ their bodies I think it's awesome! I only wish I had that kind of confidence. |

not all caribana partiers are black, but considering that it is a festival for a culture (west indian culture) that consists namely of black and brown people, a huge proportion of the organizers and antendees are black and brown. |

last caribana I went to a reggae concert. it was great, no problem at all (esp with the ganja everywhere :D)
however,I agree with everyone that the bling-bling types are annoying |
