A few facts, since people seem to make them up if they don't know 'em, anyways.
a) The Cariban Cultural Festival paid the Toronto Police Department $1.1 million dollars this year for extra police. THEY PAY FOR IT PEOPLE. This is roughly the same number of police officers it takes to police the Indy. The city provides some basic police as a base (as they do for all events... weekend festivals are a fact of life here in Toronto and it makes sense that we need to police them.
b) Violent crime during the week that includes Caribana has actually gone down over the past few years. Last year was the lowest it has been since 1990. Again, the conspiracy theories and made up factoids about rampant crime are just that - made up.
c) The $300 million study was undertaken by Enigma Research in 2003. It inluded looking at all the city's large events (including Pride Week) and was paid for by the previous PC government who certainly weren't looking to give even more credence to the blacks or the gays. It was quite complex and included any outflow of dollars by locals as well as additional costs for infastructure (ie. TTC) It separates tourist dollars from local dollars and in both of those categories breaks down the groups into sub-groups (ie. Tourists who cam specifically for Caribanna vs. tourists who were in town anyways and only decided to attend at the last minute... in which case their hotel rooms, etc. would not be included under the Caribana revenue.) My point on this is that very smart people spent a lot of time trying to analyze facts to figure this stuff out - as compared to some of you who are just happy to make it up.

I don't mean to be a drama queen. I'm not going to quit, I just need some time off ( i do it all the time- post a lot and then take a nice long break from it it).
I'm glad you are here to bring facts to the forum- your posts are so enlightening :)
This whole thread is bothering me, b/c of the needless negative attitudes toward other ppl who have done nothing to them. who's only crime is wanting to have fun, listen to music and dress how they want.
i know that i'm repeating this b/c I am hotheaded right now, but there are ppl who have commented on their distaste of some of the women in caribana who I have come out and defended when others have made low blows about their physical appearances. sweet irony.... |

While I don't doubt these people being smart, these same people don't even list Carabana as being in the top 50 Festivals in all of Ontario...
Hell...the Wiarton Willie Festival is even on that list lol! :haha:

I'm drawing on personal experience here so I'm definitely not making it up, since it's not 3rd-party at all. Having said that, I owe you a drink for bringing in some actual facts instead of the usual rhetoric. If Caribana really footed the bill for all those police this year then that makes a world of difference to the whole debate.
I'm still skeptical about the $300 million figure but I'm more than willing to go straight to the source to check my suspicion - I don't suppose you have any info on where I could find the study, Chris?
Oh and Tara: I'm fairly certain I never endorsed anorexia. I truly don't mean to disrespect you and I agree that nobody should go through that or should feel that they have to. But I never made any statements to the contrary so you shouldn't be getting angry at me for that - I'm simply talking about fashion here, certain clothes are designed for certain body types and people just shouldn't wear articles that don't fit them properly. That's why they have convenient pretty labels that say "S / M / L / XL". "XL" sized people should not wear clothes marked "S" - it's simply common sense.
And I am and always will be of the mind that people should take care of their bodies, but they should do that with exercise or sports and not diets. Forget anorexia, I've always hated weight-loss diets because they send the wrong message (that people can look good and still be couch potatoes). That's how I feel, and I honestly can't see how it makes me insensitive, but if you feel that way then I'm sorry to have offended you. |

You're a moron, so it comes as no surprise that you don't get what people are so sensitive about. Maybe, if you actually took the time to *read* some of the posts and *think* about what they're trying to say, instead of rattling off the first thing that popped into your mind, you'd stand a chance. Then again, maybe -- i'm just asking too much from an individual with a toaster-level intelligence and a penchant for weak one liners.

Im just sick of people crying racism at any given opportunity. We are complaining about the thug element of this festival. If there were as many problems at other events that were "cultural" or not then you'd hear the same complaints. Let's face it, certain events are know for certain things. Raves and parties for drugs, gay pride for street sausage, and caribana for violence. |
