LOL...wouldnt it be "funny" if they wandered to docks for the reunion by a mistake. hopefully some interesting "characters" attending would scare them away. :D

not last summer but the year before there wasa soca party in KH while there was a resident night in guv- well some ppl were not able to get into the KH and ended up coming to Guv b/c they had nothingto do- i met these 2 awesome guys who were so open to the music (at first they were like 'so do they play this kind of music all night' but at the end of the night they were partying w/ ppl and having a great time).

Are you being sarcastic? Because I live downtown...What the hell are you talking about?

Apparently there was a huge rumble in the middle of the main room last night at Guv. My buddy decribed the guys involved as "caribana partiers that couldnt find the orange room." bahahahhaha Coincidence? i think not so...

Actually, I think he gave an interesting point of view that couldn't be summed up into two small lines...like your response.

Let's take it easy, your beginning to sound like you hate us for not liking Caribana. Why is it so wrong for us not to like it....I mean, you probably don't like all the dj's or EDM events...so why take it so personal.
No matter how you put it...Caribana, like any other big event, has many downs to it->
I remember the World cup (i think it was 1998)and I was in what used to be little Italy while they were celebrating the soccer win and the Argentineans came and a fight broke out...over soccer. WTF. happens when an event isn't organized and the soccer thing was way smaller than Caribana. That's why Caribana isn't all that great....to many incidents which I've seen with my own eyes.

I agree, stop the racism and seperation, yall soul bruthas!!!:D

I should have put it in my original post...but I was just being facetious!! I'm surprised you didn't pick up on that...tsk tsk.

Thanks for your input DarkWater, and incidentally, you're an idiot, stfuplzkthxbye. FYI I graduated so I'm not even in school anymore - let's see if you can say the same thing in a few years.

Its a big festival, the more people, the more chances of violence occuring. Many festivals have had their shares of violence and accidents and deaths, there is no reason this festival should be shut down on that principle. If that was the case, then say goodbye to all music festivals, ever.

As I pointed out earlier, SARS-stock involved millions but I never heard about anyone getting killed or seriously injured. How do you explain that?

I'm just curious aaron, you said that you were equally annoyed by the euro celebration, so would you be againt a love parade type party in TO? I mean, I think it would be awesome, to have the music that i love playing and to be dancing in the street w/ ppl who feel the same way. I'm sure there would be ppl that would complain about the traffic situation, or the need for such a party, just as a lot of ppl do for all sorts of actitivities and street parties. I think all kinds of groups should get a turn to have a big street party- i truly belive that these festivals (even if they don't interst me, make our city rich w/ culture). I def can see your point, b/c some bad does go down w/ caribana, but a party of this magnitude w/ a lot of young ppl is bound to cause problems.

That's a good question. Obviously I'd love to see an LP type event here assuming there was ever enough support for it. But having said that - if it attracted a disproportionate number of shady characters and resulted in serious crime, then I'd say it either it shouldn't happen or needs a lot more security. And for an event like LP, swarms of security would kind of kill the vibe I think. I wouldn't want a Toronto Loveparade if people got shot at it.

I'm willing to sacrifice a lot of things to have a good time, but I draw the line when it comes to personal safety. One of the reasons I didn't complain much about the Euro cup, as annoying as it was, was that even though it was a major inconvenience at least nobody got hurt, at least not to my knowledge.

I'm just against any kind of event that trivializes public safety. If there's enough security around to make sure nothing bad happens then that's fine - but in the case of Caribana we have the city paying for it, which I don't think is fair. In the EDM scene for example, clubs hire rent-a-cops in case of emergencies. But for Caribana, the city had to step in and hire its own cops when it started getting out of control (i.e. last year) - if an after-hours club got out of control then make no mistake, the city would sooner shut it down than pay its own cops to monitor the place.

So if you're asking how they should tone it down? How about they hire their own security, instead of placing that logistical and financial burden on the city. That would be a good start. I'd say the same for any large-scale festival in Toronto too - if there's any indication that it might get out of control, make sure there are preventative measures in place.

Edit: One point I forgot to address, about cultural value: I never really meant to put forth the message that Caribana is devoid of any cultural value. I mean obviously the reason people from all over come to it is that it is very culturally significant. But that doesn't override the fact that the non-cultural stuff, the negative stuff, is just way out of control. If every large-scale cultural event had these problems then we might be looking at a greater political/philosophical question here, but from what I know it's mainly limited to Caribana...
