SO random that I pop my head in this thread bc I never do......but:
When I was blonde (and still go here for that matter) I got my highlights done at Lacomme on 23rd (I think btw 7th and 8th)....down the block from david barton gym.
A tad expensive but the guy who does my hair (marquis is his name) got an emmy or grammy or something for doing hair on the View talk show so he is good. |

so what's there to do in NYC the week leading up to (and including) NYE?
i'm heading to times square. should I bring a jacket?
a friend reckons it's best to stay a bit outside the city and just use the fantastic rail network. is that right? where would you recommend cheap accomo?

it's april and it is still freezing up here.
I suggest taking the subways to the city. It's really easy to use and only 2$ each way. |

everything u just said is not a good idea. Times Square for nye is a persons worst nightmare (TRUST ME I worked there). Look on hotels.com...they have hotels for $130 or so a night in nice areas in MANHATTAN :) days hotel my rents stay at for $120 night, Hotel 64 my friend stayed in for about the same. I wouldnt bother staying outside the city if you dont wanna travel back and forth for a good 30 minutes or more. |

It looks like the place to be though. You mean it's a nightmare logistically? NYE in any major city is a nightmare, but I think it's worth doing once in a lifetime.

120 USD is quite a packet for us Aussies, however of course the convenience factor is worth a consideration.
Thanks for the tips. |

I promise you its not. They close off the streets entirely at a certain point, so you have to be there in the middle of the day just to stand there in the freezing cold, wait til the ball drops, then they kick everybody out immidiately after.
So you essentially have to stand there in a sardine can all day(with NO alcohol mind you, since they changed the rules a couple of years ago because it got TOO crazy). Last year I was working in a bar near there (like 8 blocks away) and even THAT far away it took me NINETY minutes to get to the subway (9 blocks from my work) because there were to many people, police were controlling the traffic, and I was literally getting trampled and suffocated to the point I couldnt breathe.
I cant speak for all people, but I know 99.9% of ny'ers will tell you the same. :( :( its horrendous. nyc on nye in OTHER areas (although ridic expensive can me a LOT of fun). |

by subway jfk takes forever (and ever and ever), but there is no subway at laguardia. you have to take a cab, or at least a cab to the subway.
Depends on where you are going too. To harlem on the A train(about 15 minutes past midtown, which is where I am assuming you will go) take me and hour and a half from JFK. |

If you can spare the cash, usually cabs have a set fee of $45 into anywhere in the city and its USUALLY faster (of course there are certain rush hour times you ought to avoid). I got picked up from JFK and LAG a few times and it usually takes 20-30 minutes, and you dont have to watch/carry your bags over turnstiles, etc.
Also in terms of pacha (from other thread) it closes 6-7 am, and there are afterparties at Love (at the very least), as well as peoples houses lol ;)
PS: I have no clue about newark airport. |

Newark is by far my favorite airport for NYC. The AirTran and NJ Transit get you right to Penn Station. NJ Transit leaves Newark about every half hour (check schedules at NJ Transit schedules to see specifics, because late night and weekend aren't as frequent), and it's $14 each way. |
