Terrorists Attack London's Transportation System

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair said it was "reasonably clear" there had been a series of terrorist attacks.
He said it was "particularly barbaric" that it was timed to coincide with the G8 summit. He is returning to London.
An Islamist website has posted a statement - purportedly from al-Qaeda - claiming it was behind the attacks.
London's police chief Sir Ian Blair said there had been "many casualties" but it was too early to put a figure to those killed or injured.
More than 100 casualties and one of the dead were taken to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.
And St Mary's Hospital said it was dealing with 26 injured people, including four with critical injuries and eight in a serious condition.
Sir Ian urged people to stay where they were and not to call emergency services unless it was a life-threatening situation.
He reassured the public that an emergency plan was in place and the situation was "steadily coming under control".
Scotland Yard said explosions have been reported at Edgware Road, King's Cross, Liverpool Street, Russell Square, Aldgate East and Moorgate

I'm watching the national ABC feed at work... people are in bad shape. They blew the top off a double decker bus after they closed the subways.... that's where they think the most fatalities are at the moment.
Crazy! All of my mother's family is in London, but there's no reason to think that any of them were on the Underground.

Been in communication with work for the better part of this morning (London), and apparently it's not as bad as it looks. Strange the targets they picked, Edgeware and Aldgate are very small in comparison to some of the biggies (IE: Victoria, Picadilly).
I'd hate to be one of the 3 million commuters walking home after the work day. Christ. |

My mom just told me this:
I was just working out that Edgware Road station, where one of the bombs went off, is the one Jean (her twin sister) and I went through every morning going to work when we worked at Baker Street and Oxford Street. It's the station where both the Metropolitan and the Bakerloo lines pull into the platforms across from each other, and you could jump onto the Met train if you were in a hurry, because it went straight through to Baker Street without stopping, whereas the Bakerloo train stopped about 3 times or more on it's way.

Me too. My mother, brother and stepfather have been vacationing in London/Paris/Spain and were flying back from London at 3pm local time...I spent the better part of this morning trying to track them down. Thank god for RIM and blackberry - I got an email from them and they were at the airport waiting to depart.
I would not want to be flying in UK airspace today though...I can't wait to hear that they are back home safely this afternoon. |
