The glory years of 99-01, as you people like to call it, were nothing of the sort. They just feel that way because that was when the majority of you first started getting into trance. With this whole new world of music being so fresh and new to you, there was no way you could differentiate between quality and crap, and so elect to just like everything, thus hyping the out of scores of ridiculously mediocre tracks. Honeymoon phases have a tendancy to dull anyone's sense of value or worth, but in truth the music had been stagnating since late 97.
Familiarity breeds contempt, so the longer you stay within a genre, the harder it is to find new music in that genre that excites you. It's called the Law of Diminishing Returns. So when you complain that today's tracks don't lift your skirt and it's just not like the good ole days of 99 when every track was awesome.......you're wrong. You've just grown tired and jaded of an old and busted music formula that overstayed its welcome well over six years ago. |
You havent the foggiest idea about whats going on in this thread do you ?
Ive been with dance music since 89-90 when i was in the UK. Going through from tracks like capricorn - 20Hz, the sasha and digweed thing, happy hardcore.
I can tell you when 98 landed there WAS soemthing different about the music. And when 99 exploded it WAS that damn good.
I dont agree at all with your post, its a load of poppycock. Ive grown tired of all, the music just isnt as good. |

I had always been into dance since way back but I knew something magical was happening with the music from mid '98. Some excellent tunes from xtravaganza and hooj.
By the summer '99 there were so many tunes its was amazing they were played in every club, bar and radio station. There were possibly as many as 5 dance magazines and of course fast car, all with free CDs rammed with upfront tunes.
Judge Jules and dave pearce (seems strange now) I would say were very influential with dance anthems and jules's show fri and sat.
As cheesy as it got was synth & strings as someone mentioned (not that bad tho), vengaboys (good airscape mix tho), the launch, alice deejay - better off alone (signum mix still pwns ), atb - til i come
.... but it was '99 and nearly every DJ could have gotten away with playing these... because?...
Everyone seemed to be up for it and on the same vibe when you went out - '99 was a great summer. (Ibiza uncovered on sky one 2yrs previous have anything to do with this, shaping what 'our generation' (i was 19 then) expected - I wonder)
Oakies essenital tour(s) and possibly one of oakie's finest sets in june
Paul Oakenfold - Gatecrasher @ Lotherton Hall, Leeds, England

02. Space Manoeuvres - "Stage One [Tilt's Apollo 11 Mix]"
03. AMbassador - "The Fade [Fade Mix]"
04. Mara - "One [Hamel's Implant Remix]"
05. Space Brothers - "Forgiven [Origin Mix]"
06. Mauro Picotto - "Lizard"
07. Jon Vesta - "Gull"
08. Tekknova - "Last Trip To Paradise"
09. Art of Trance - "Madagascar [Ferry Corsten Remix]"
10. Push - "Universal Nation [Ferry Corsten Remix]"
11. Olmec Heads - "Spritualized [Astral Mix]"
12. Space Brothers - "Heaven Will Come [Olmec Heads Vocal Dub]"
13. CJ Bolland - "The Prophet"
wow :eyes:
Final note(s):
music was't produced for asot
people didn't collect every track heard on asot from p2p.
armin really was't that big a name in DJing.
ferry played something other than his own material (don't blame him now tho)
judge jules and oakenfold were on form (not sure i can say that about pearcy)
everyone wanted to be a DJ
most tunes had either a pvd, lange, dary, ferry or dumonde remix
ministry of sound and nukleuz were credible labels
majority of vocals had meaning (chakra / s bros etc) / were minmal
vocals were not cheesy or should i say there were less songs with cheesy vocals.
nearly every tune (major labels neo, nukleuz, xtrav, perfecto, am:pm) released was guarenteed a chart position, it was not uncommon for the charts to be domonated with dance music.
... think ive said enough of how i remember it.
TUNE!

Forget it googooly, you'll never convince him. He's a 1999 freak.
Yeah, there was something special about 1999/00, and I didn't realise how good I had it then. It's not fashionable to say 'I love trance' now that hip-hop is the trend.
But what I've got now that I didn't have in 1999 is the realisation that it's not just a trend for me. I still love trance, despite that none of my friends do. Today, it's all about the music, and I've only realised that since my friends have deserted trance for the next bandwagon. Trance music is taking priority over my friends these days, and that's down to sheer love of the music. I only wish I'd realised back in 1999 that it wasn't the going out with my mates that I loved - it was the music. |

I disagree - the atmosphere is not there its just not the same.
Don't get me wrong i still enjoy trance, i just think its lost the underground sound and feeling it had. It is ironic that it has lost its underground sound since it had it when it was most popular in '99 and lost it now when no self repecting trance release will chart.
Back then it wasn't all lovey dovy love songs for the radio but about having fun to banging tunes. All tunes today seem to try to hard to be either the next cafe del mar or have the most perplexing and pointless vocals or over complicated melodies that run start to finish with the the standard breakdowns for 7 - 9 mins.
I wouldn't totaly blame asot or gdjb but more the cheese and fluffy sounds that comes out of trance around the world from above & beyond.
This is debate that will go on for a while and no one is right or wrong...
However some nice 'trance' tunes i liked this year
Outburst - Vengeance
Johan Gielen - Dream Child
Vadim Zhukov - Fate / The Stranger
Christain Zechner - Stella Winds
Green Martian - Ladies & Gentlemen
Solid Slide - Belo Horizonte
The rest of the tunes I would consider 'good' are in the prog scene which imo is busting a nut at the moment with creativity some excellent productions, there would be too many to list. |

What a post! :)
I'm not getting into the mentioning of tunes, because they've all been mentioned, which brings back so many great memories by the way! Someone needs to pull a Psy T and devote a 400 minute set to this golden year. The highlight for me, and still my fave to this day is Planet Perfecto feat. Grace - Not Over Yet '99 (Matt Darey mix) It seems anything that Darey, Corsten or Oakenfold touched turned to gold. You had Push, Kai, Sunscreem, Digweed also. Enough of the bullocks of '99 being overrated merely because it's the first year we were introduced into trance. I've heard earlier works. They sound too lifeless, mechanical and robotic. Like everyone's said before, it's the FEELING that will forever distinguish '99 from '93 to 2005. To me, it's euphoric. I don't think that adjective can be used to describe any other trance year, whether it be past, present or future.
Excellent thread :D
The new Pryda's "Aftermath" track really brings back that '99 feeling to me. Check it out. Also, I can't remember what year Origin's "Refined Intricacy" was, but another gem. |
