What was '99/'00 all about?

Following some interesting comments made here, I thought I'd start a thread in its own right.
What was magical about '99/'00? There was trance/techno before it, but why these years? Planet Perfecto, PvD, Oakenfold, Lost Witness, PF Project, Chicane, Matt Darey, Ferry +aliases. Didn't a few make it into the commercial top 40? Artists with amazing sets like PvD's one at Cafe Mambo. Crazy nights out such as Cafe del Mar --> Eden/Amnesia. I was only 15 lol, but I remember the Ibiza scene being raved about on the radio and TV etc.
I wish I could go back in time and experience this buzz in the white isle but alas!
So, what was amazing about it? |

| That it exploded even more so from that time (perhaps?) |

Productions had some sort of pureness in them.
GENUWINE. UNIQUE. VARIETY.
Now everything sounds so half assed and follows a certain forumla...feels like you're listening to the same track over and over. |

| the majority of releases were of a good standard, pre-internet producers lacked, allowing those who did it as a profession to release lots of quality hits. for 1999 at least, it was everywhere in the uk, sure there was some dodgy stuff (the launch, yomanda - synth & strings etc) but it was so much fun you didn't care) it's a shame nobody recorded some of the old radio 1 sets, even dave pearce's dance anthems wasn't cheesey form labels he has a say in. |

EDIT from later post:
For those that remember the feeling LISTEN to '99 (and those that don't :haha: )
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I had always been into dance since way back but I knew something magical was happening with the music from mid '98. Some excellent tunes from xtravaganza and hooj.
By the summer '99 there were so many tunes its was amazing they were played in every club, bar and radio station. There were possibly as many as 5 dance magazines and of course fast car, all with free CDs rammed with upfront tunes.
Judge Jules and dave pearce (seems strange now) I would say were very influential with dance anthems and jules's show fri and sat.
As cheesy as it got was synth & strings as someone mentioned (not that bad tho), vengaboys (good airscape mix tho), the launch, alice deejay - better off alone (signum mix still pwns ), atb - til i come
.... but it was '99 and nearly every DJ could have gotten away with playing these... because?...
Everyone seemed to be up for it and on the same vibe when you went out - '99 was a great summer. (Ibiza uncovered on sky one 2yrs previous have anything to do with this, shaping what 'our generation' (i was 19 then) expected - I wonder)
Oakies essenital tour(s) and possibly one of oakie's finest sets in june
Paul Oakenfold - Gatecrasher @ Lotherton Hall, Leeds, England
01. Planet Perfecto feat. Grace - "It's Not Over Yet '99 [Breeder's It is Now Remix]"
02. Space Manoeuvres - "Stage One [Tilt's Apollo 11 Mix]"
03. AMbassador - "The Fade [Fade Mix]"
04. Mara - "One [Hamel's Implant Remix]"
05. Space Brothers - "Forgiven [Origin Mix]"
06. Mauro Picotto - "Lizard"
07. Jon Vesta - "Gull"
08. Tekknova - "Last Trip To Paradise"
09. Art of Trance - "Madagascar [Ferry Corsten Remix]"
10. Push - "Universal Nation [Ferry Corsten Remix]"
11. Olmec Heads - "Spritualized [Astral Mix]"
12. Space Brothers - "Heaven Will Come [Olmec Heads Vocal Dub]"
13. CJ Bolland - "The Prophet"
wow :eyes:
Final note(s):
music was't produced for asot
people didn't collect every track heard on asot from p2p.
armin really was't that big a name in DJing.
ferry played something other than his own material (don't blame him now tho)
judge jules and oakenfold were on form (not sure i can say that about pearcy)
everyone wanted to be a DJ
most tunes had either a pvd, lange, dary, ferry or dumonde remix
ministry of sound and nukleuz were credible labels
majority of vocals had meaning (chakra / s bros etc) / were minmal
vocals were not cheesy or should i say there were less songs with cheesy vocals.
nearly every tune (major labels neo, nukleuz, xtrav, perfecto, am:pm) released was guarenteed a chart position, it was not uncommon for the charts to be domonated with dance music.
... think ive said enough of how i remember it.
TUNE!

that's a damn fine post to educate people. It was a special era for sure, and maybe you had to live it, to hear everything & so on, but it was a great time, even into 2000 & 2001/2 the tunes were still coming, allbeit maybe slightly differently. Trance was at it's strongest without ASOT, without GDJB, without the internet playing a big part in it. |
