I agree with that, but the industry is slowly starting to realize that Linux and OSS makes much more sense than M$ Monopoly.
So Linux is getting it's games too.. like Quake for example.
You know, I have a laptop from work, that I use for games, and talking to people when sitting comfortably in bed. But when it comes doing dev. and netowrk related things, I have my trusty Snail Machine, powered by an Athlon 1.33 Ghz, underclocked at 900Mhz running Gentoo. If I would run Win XP on it, it would be horrifically slow.
This is what I love about Linux. You can use your old hardware which is still 100 times more powerfull that what they used to put the man on the moon. Think about it. How many computers will be trown away when Vista comes along, because "they aren't powerfull enough"? Hardware that is still pristine! I find it being not only an economical fart but also very bad for the environment.
And of course, as a responsible individual, I prefer having my data safe than playing games.
Microsoft did contribute a lot to the computer industry, there's no denying that. However it's also responsible for some of the industries biggest problems. Something a lot of people forget. |
I'll agree with you that having to upgrade hardware because of software is utterly retarded - software is written for hardware, not the other way around.
That is why I laugh at the people who are using Vista right now. People are willing to sacrifice so much just so their box can look pretty. If I had my way, I want Vista to be the biggest flop ever, which will either:
A) Force Microsoft to go back to the drawing board with their next OS, and concentrate on features and not eye-candy
or
B) Give Linux a bigger market share so that third-party devs start releasing Linux-versions of their software so that Linux users don't feel like complete outcasts when it comes to third-party software.
I don't mind Linux, it's just in its current state, to use for casual computing, it's too much of a mental effort. Which is why I have XP + Vista Skin. |
