Are you a moron? It's actually quite complicated to make, you have to think on so many more levels when you make it. The fx and edits are key whereas trance is to me banging out some loops and making a fluffy generic melody. Theres so much more diversity to minimal as you call it. The rules are there to be broken more and in my opinion it's much harder to make something that is cutting edge. |

It's not only minimal, but techno music in overall (except for the harder boring stuff, hard techno etc). With all it's diversity in sound it sounds so technological, experimental, futuristic...i can't describe the proper meaning...
Maybe sophisticated is the wrong word. I am not trying to be l33t or anything, personally i listen to all kinds of house music. But techno is just different. |

one reason why i like minimal music and why creating minimal stuff is so difficult, is because when you only have that one sound, that one synth or effect, you better make sure it sounds perfect! otherwise you have nothing..
with fluffy trance it doesn't matter if the bassline doesn't sound as good as it could because you can (and will) hide it behind layers of pads, effects and synths. |

trance isnt the only other genre in the world. sure there is some clever techno out there, but techno is by no means the most artistic and complex and thought out music in the world. far from it.
stupid thread :toothless |

Yeah. "Making a melody" is what some people call writing music. Not that you'd ever catch techno artists doing it.
(I don't actually believe that. But your crap general dismissal of trance deserved a ripost) |

| Techno and trance are different genres. Sure there's some trance like techno (tech trance) but what has made trance different is a greater emphasis on repeated melodic fragments, rather than a relentless beat and rhythm. Both have layers, both have some stuff more complex or artistic than others in the same genre. I find the more spacier, progressive stuff the most artistic, like some of the stuff in my sig. Downtempo is quite artistic too, and some trance is very artistic, especially the older stuff, like from Chicane, PvD and BT. They made it artistic. Two producers that make really artistic trance music nowadays are Micro de Govia and Mark Otten IMO. What I mean by this is compositional stuff. Sure almost anything can be art, but some stuff is more "artistic" if you will... |

yeah, like chicane - don't give up
"Don't give up, you know it's true
Gotta do what you wanna do
Don't give it up, you don't have to
Gotta do what you wanna do
Oh yeah"
well, i'm sure chicane has some other, good tunes. |

Thats my least favorite Chicane track, and now he's gone down hill IMO, but listen to any track on "Far From The Maddening Crowds" or a few on "Behind The Sun" and you'll see...Chicane's stuff is highly artistic...compositional...thats what I think has typically set trance a part from techno, is that trance has been more compositional then techno, with a more reliance on structure and melody and harmonics. Some techno has this as well, but it's been much more prominent in trance over the years, still is to a certain degree. Techno i've seen as less structured then trance... |

i think you and me have different definitions of structure.
it's a bit difficult explaining the geniality of techno on a forum for people who love (fluffy?) trance, because it's not about the melodies. it's about the individual sounds, the blipps and the beeps, so to speak :)
anyway, i too love great melodies, which is why i listen to a lot of pop and rock music today, but trance got boring and repetitive after hearing the same thing done over and over again. same pads, same sounds, similar chords, etc.. like i got bored with the older rock music a couple of years ago. always the same setup, guitars, drums, bass, singer, the same structure. |

My definition of structure is something that I guess is more "musical" or "compositional" in that it has melodic phrases, a more structured beat pattern and has a greater emphasis not on just on a beat, but on melody and harmony...something more like classical music. A lot of the big techno stuff (the non experimental) is much more about a beat/rhythm, is much more "pure dance music" but it's not something, well for me at least, that I can sit down to and have a good listen to it and enjoy it. It's hard to get that stuff stuck in your head, you can get trance melodies stuck in your head and it's kinda fun. It's easier for me to remember a trance tune off the top of my head then a techno tune.
I know what your talking about with rehashed sounds, but there are some geniunely different sounds coming from certain artists, you just have to know where to look. Micro de Govia sometimes uses some of the same stuff but his music is highly compositional, and I think "Vital Spark" is a phenomenal tune that isn't super fluffy, but it's not like it doesn't have any emotion (to me emotion or some sense of humaneness is important in my music, hence why I don't like a lot of techno). The breakdown in that tune is also quite inventive, and it's gradual, it doesn't just appear out of the blue, it's not super melodramatic (those I can't stand anymore). I guess I like the idea of putting a human element into the machine, not just making something cold or detached, or just something with a "beat". I guess I try to find stuff that isn't as "overtly" electronic sounding with blips and beeps as your talking about...
Another I mentioned was Mark Otten, and I can assure you he does not use the same old trance sounds, he is more or less an evolution in the sound. He hasn't had that many releases yet, but the stuff he has released, such as "Mushroom Therapy", "Tranquility", "Crossroads" and "So Serene" are quite nice. Another is Kalafut & Fygle, and they have a similar structure to most trance (epic trance) but the sounds are different, the breakdowns are better i'de say, a little different, more gradual, a bit "chilled". It's like a slower version of epic, but you really have to hear it to understand. It's not quite progressive, it's not quite epic trance. It's more or less a fusion of the two. There tunes are "3579 KM", "Astra", "Lullaby" and the latest, unreleased one is "Novocaine".
I can gurantee you, there stuff isn't "samey", and it's all quite artistic, compositional. Sure they may use a similar structure, but they make it new, better and a more "21st Century" sound, then a rehash of the same old trance riffs and beats.. |
