Dude Tiesto used to spin techno before he spun trance, back in the mid 90s. I have one of his "Space Age" CDs...but yeah now he's a hit or miss IMO. He's plays some tech trance though...but he's no Marco V. I don't think techno sucks like this other guy, I just admit to being techno ignorant...base my observations off a few sets and tunes i've listened to...but i've been checking stuff on BeatPort recently...maybe this is the thread that will get me into some techno ;).

Yeah, I think i'll replace some random internet dummie named "Psy T" with the other guy who worked on Acid Eiffel, Ludovic Navarre.

she's just giving me credit for recommending it and/or playing it in my long set, not for producing it....

Complicated to make, but the result is boring to listen to. Unless you get a DJ like Richie Hawtin or Akufen who layer like three minimal tracks on top of each other in their mixes.

exactly. we are talking about dance music here. techno is made for a dance floor, it's supposed to be played by a dj, layered with another track, effects or maybe some short vocal sample.

i'd rather listen to trance at home than dance to it. i do like listening to unmixed techno sometimes but most techno releases are meant more as tools for the dj. but we all knew this, right?

about electronic music getting closer and closer to sounding like 'real' music, i think it's certainly possible but i don't think that's where it's going. maybe that's why house suddenly did a 180 and went from this funky, disco, guitars and 'real'-sound and went electro. maybe.

A lot of the big techno stuff (the non experimental) is much more about a beat/rhythm, is much more "pure dance music" but it's not something, well for me at least, that I can sit down to and have a good listen to it and enjoy it. It's hard to get that stuff stuck in your head, you can get trance melodies stuck in your head and it's kinda fun.

YES! and this is were you and i differ, for me dance music is made for dancing not sitting back listening to. if i want that i'll listen to pop/rock music. it's just very (un)fortunate that dance music can also be listened to.

I think "Vital Spark" is a phenomenal tune that isn't super fluffy, but it's not like it doesn't have any emotion (to me emotion or some sense of humaneness is important in my music, hence why I don't like a lot of techno). The breakdown in that tune is also quite inventive, and it's gradual, it doesn't just appear out of the blue, it's not super melodramatic (those I can't stand anymore). I guess I like the idea of putting a human element into the machine, not just making something cold or detached, or just something with a "beat". I guess I try to find stuff that isn't as "overtly" electronic sounding with blips and beeps as your talking about...

You could be right or it could just be that there's emotion and umaneness in techno as well, only it isn't as obvious as with trance. that's why i think trance sounds cheesy, it's like comparing a ballad by britney spears to something by a 70's progressive rock band. if it's about love, you know britney will have "love" in the title of the track and she'll mention love 100 times before the song is over.

i'm not saying there's a lot of emotion in techno, it is about dancing after all, but there's certainly not cold or detached. when a dj is playing it, mixing with one track, eq:ing, playing with it, it grows and changes.

if you want an example of a track that conveys more emotion than your average trance anthem then find "Elektrochemie - Don't Go" (came out a few weeks ago, i think). I guess it's not exactly techno but it's minimal at least.

also, someone wrote "Art? Well, it's not mathematics." I would say mathematics is art as well, and so is programming and a lot of other things. it's just that people seem to think art is a painting on a canvas in a museum.. it's 2006, that's not how it works anymore..

Congratulations, you officially played a record and someone officially heard it. You're the most unique and different and recognizable individual i've ever met. I bet you play that record like no other. I think every time I find a new good tune when listening to DJ XX, i'll write his name down beside the track somewhere and say 'THANKS DJ XX FOR THIS TRACK HERE!' because man, that just makes so much sense. It's not like I could have stumbled upon any of the hundreds or thousands of other DJ's who own and play that record instead!

After DJ X shows track A to persons 1-1,000, nobody else cares where persons 1-1,000 first heard track A, and it doesn't matter. And there's no need to 'credit' every DJ you've ever heard every first track from ever in your life.

thanks for attacking me for elucidating on your ignorance, highly appreciated.
kindly off.

p.s. have you bothered to consider the possibility that i actually played it better than most do? who are these djs anyway? none of the djs who used to play it play it now, and most of the new generation havent even heard it.
