I think you can be a skilled and talented musician, but not have a million dollar studio. You don't have to be a no-talent teenager to make music without all this fancy stuff. I'm sure there are many well-trained knowledgable musicians who don't have a collection of expensive machines, but so many us us just ignore them by default because our taste is only for people who have made these huge investments. I think that kind of default ignoring of otherwise good musicians just because they arent using top fancy technology causes alot of people to ignore alot of good music. A seasoned musician can also be an ameteur, can also use technology that isn't the fanciest, there's plenty of great music made on ataris and 1980's macs and stuff for exampe, but if we insist that everything be products of the newest and fanciest of machines then we subscribe to this materialism that compormises the quality of the music. Too much focus is on these traits of expensive production, not enough on the spirit of the music.

maybe I've just been listening to to much "not the normal radio"

jesus replies are coming in fast, I just wanted to say, that I dont think the tone of these arguments is as serious as some people make them out to be. I think alot of us just say these things for the fun of it and we aren't actually arguing as passionately as it may seem. I feel the giant caps are unnecesary, we are just having a little fun, so lighen up k?

[09:03] DJ Freaq: well
[09:03] DJ Freaq: i kinda look at it this way
[09:03] DJ Freaq: i got invited to go to some schmoozer democratic party thing once
[09:03] DJ Freaq: and I went
[09:03] DJ Freaq: and it was the most boring thing ever
[09:03] DJ Freaq: it's just ego-masturbation
[09:03] DJ Freaq: there's nothing to discuss that has any substance to it
[09:03] DJ Freaq: because everyone already agrees with each other!
[09:04] DJ Freaq: so what minor disagreements in philosophy there are, are so small it's fluff
[09:04] DJ Freaq: and based on what you said
[09:04] DJ Freaq: i see these noobs doing the same thing
[09:04] DJ Freaq: they love it so much
[09:04] DJ Freaq: that's all they care about

the equipment and the technology have very little to do with it, my production-based criticisms of your sig in that other thread were production based because it's the (only?) objectively quantifiable aspect of music making.

there's no lack of late 80's-early 90's music that has higher production values than most music out today, such a lack does exist in the netlabels scene (based on my limited observation of it).

Well this thread was sensible and had quite a good discussion to it. If I wanted mindless crap i'd go to the chill-out room but the has spilled out of a few brains into here it seems.

And by the way i'm not taking this thread seriously or anything, was just nice to have some sensible discussion. Too many empty-headed twats around these forums.
