Is techno a form of art? (pg. 5)

On one side you have these people who are all about finding tunes with high production, who insist that a tune come out of the best technology can offer, expensive synths, expensive fx, top of the line hardware and expert use of those machines. But at the same time those same people prefer these tracks that come from years long past, when machines weren't nearly as advanced, when the music came from a grassroots movement of ameteurs throwing illegal parties, when there weren't all these fancy expensive machines and there wasn't enough money in the industry for all this fancy studio stuff.

I don't think spiral tribe had a six figure studio is what I'm saying. We have this really expensive taste these days, but at the same time lament that EDM no longer sounds like it did in the days when things did not require as much money. Does it seem strangely contradictory to anybody else?

I was never one into he underground parties with simple banging music. I've always been into the progessive, melodic and uplifting stuff, the stuff that is more compositional, with some state of the art technology. The way I see it, is that with electornics progressing the way they are, electronic music is going to continue to progress further and further until it reaches a point where things will begin to sound less and less overtly electronic, IE it will be harder and harder to distinguish between a real guitar and a live guitar. True it takes the human element out of it, sure, but at the same time, with electronic music, you will start to see a more human element being put into the music itself.

So I see it as the more we can make these electronic sounds to not sound so simple, not sound just like blips and beeps and these super saws and these generic synth pads, then the more human and warm it will sound, because of the fact it will sound less like a machine and more like live instrumentation. So in a way, what we are seeing with electronic music is the resurgence in some producers of I guess you could call it the "new classical composers", using all these sounds at their disposal to create compositions and soundscapes, without the use of live instruments. Synthetic symphonies if you will. I think BT was a genius at this in the beginning, and William Orbit is one of the guys that really can be considered an electronic composer, and Vangelis, Georgio Moroder and Jean Michel Jarre were also electronic composers. I see the ones who are doing the most musical or artistic if you will are the ones who strive to make electronic compositions, and this does include some trance artists.

The fx and edits are key whereas trance is to me banging out some loops and making a fluffy generic melody. Theres so much more diversity to minimal as you call it. The rules are there to be broken more and in my opinion it's much harder to make something that is cutting edge.

Complicated to make, but the result is boring to listen to. Unless you get a DJ like Richie Hawtin or Akufen who layer like three minimal tracks on top of each other in their mixes.

so spirit, you like EDM for the same reason that composers hate their performers? Composers always complain, they design a piece of music and their performers can never get it quite right. Sometimes a composer will write something that the person cannot play on the instrument, somtimes they miss a note, sometimes they don't play it the way the composer intended. So you get all these people flocking to computers, because it gives them full control over the performance of the piece.

A new classical aided by computers, liberating composers from the struggles with live performers, I guess it is an interesting future.

Sometimes I just wonder, maybe the focus on money is what causes so much music to suck. Maybe if we didn't care so much about expensive studios then people would put out music that was more thoughtful. Is tube reverb really that important, must we insist on giant mixing panels with motorized knobs? Is the million dollar room full of gadjets really more important than the vibe of the music? I dunno, I love technology as much as the next guy but I feel sometimes like the persuit of material things happens a bit too much, and that we shouldn't be so spoiled to insist on such costly machines and techniques, because money compromises the soul.

Its just my POV, I seem to lean more towards this DIY feeling in my music.

I understand, I like EDM because it pushes the boundaries of music, it's forward thinking and different, and quite enjoyable to listen to. I am not saying that everything has to be compositional, complex or even super musical, but more so identifiable and human. I am not saying everyone should have expensive studios with the latest set up, but rather, technology should evolve (as it is) just as the music, and it shouldn't turn more mechanical, but less, as this growth of technology comes about. I guess almost trans-humanistic in that sense, or better yet trans-musical, the technology will essentially turn electronic music into less electronic sounding, so live instrumentation will be done via electronic means, but it will still require knowing about these various sounds and how they work. It wont just be done by amatures, but seasoned musicians. Sure it's great that there's a music that people can make with not a huge background in music, but I think the electronic music created by those who have more knowledge create better music then these teenagers who don't much, but just figure out how to use the software. It's the emotion put it, it's the passion, and it's also the knowledge...not just the know how.

In the right place at the right time, I find techno enjoyable...

Art? Well, it's not mathematics. There are patterns that are fundamental, but there isn't a single parameter in techno that can't be tweaked or tainted differently by the producer's fancy.

Sounds kinda like art to me... If you don't like visiting knitting-expos - don't go (knitting has alot of fundamental patterns TOO, but there isn't a single stick that can't be tainted by the weaver's fingers).

I'm with unworldly on the materialistic side of things demonizing the musical realm.

PS - if you hate techno, than don't fukkin post... I barely listen to techno myself and I prefer an open mind.

i actually love a lot of music but trance happens to be my favorite. it's the only music that can make me feel like i'm in a different place and put me under an influence...WITHOUT drugs. i don't like when people need to pop e's to listen to trance.
