You and every writer in the Pittsburgh area, congrats. |
How many stadiums have you been to? I've been to 15 parks (PNC Park, Camden Yards, Citizens Bank Park, AT&T Park, Yankee Stadium, Fenway to name a few) so I know what I'm talking about ;)
fenway is overrated. Don't get me wrong...it has great vibe, it's near a lot of hangouts and the green monster gives the park a unique touch. However, it's definitely one of the most uncomfortable places i've seen a game unless you're 5 feet and weight 100 lbs. The only reason why the Red Sox don't have a new park is because Boston likes to pride itself on history. IMO, if you put the red sox in one of the 1970s style cereal bowl stadium ala Veterans Stadium, it will definitely still have that great vibe that you'll find at fenway.
As for Yankee Stadium, if the stadium is better than Pittsburgh, when why will they tear down the current stadium and build a new park across the street? If it was such an awesome place to play, you would have heard about mass protests from Yankee fansn everywhere. The only thing Yankee Stadium has going for it is history. You're very far from the field if you're in the left field bleachers. The hallways are very narrow. You have an eyesore with the garbage truck between the left field box seats and the bleachers. Obviously the fan vibe is great (especially in the right field bleachers), but
I can't comment on wrigley....yet. I'll be there on Friday afternoon when the Cubs are playing the Cards.
Sense of history does not necessarily mean it's a better ballpark. If you want to just compare classic ballparks, Dodger Stadium is certainly better than Fenway and Yankee Stadium. Not only is it comfortable to watch a game, they painstakingly maintai the cleanliness of the balpark and looking at elysian hills is just timeless.
Lots of writers were commenting about how good PNC park was during the all star game. ESPN did a survey of the best ballparks in baseball in 2003. Guess what came out on top? You guessed it, PNC Park ;) |

I agree. Charm is nice, it was awesome coming to Yankee stadium for the first time a few years ago for me. However, now that I go to 40 games a year, it's not exactly sublime in the entertainment experience. Or compare in beauty like in SF, Safeco, etc. Food sucks, the upper deck seats aren't good. Camden for example doesn't have a bad seat and has a wealth of awesome food, side things to do, etc. It's a more total experience. Both types of stadiums are cool to visit, that's partially what makes the baseball experience unique.
I'm excited to see a new Yankee stadium in 2009 to be honest. |

| I too have been to fenway, and I am from Chicago, although I am a white sox fan. I think the uncomfort level in fenway is vastly overblow, Im 6'1" 180 and I was fine. I realize the seats are not what most fans are used to, however I think people look far too much into it. Check out Wrigley though, right now you will only get have of the full potential of the place, seeing as how the cubs are a joke, but you'll still see why it is in my opinion and many others the best ballpark in baseball. The surrounding neighborhood is second to none, the atmosphere (when they aren't abysmal) feels like a college party. Its as much fun as you'll have at a park, however in your refrenced ESPN collumn and by a few other writers some feel it is too much of a side show and not "pure" baseball. That is why it gets hurt in the rankings. But as long as you don't like the smell of your own farts then that shouldn't be a factor. |
