Have you been to any of those 3? I've been to Marquee and it's not a hip-hop club. It was house music all night. I know some of the others are more mash-up style, mixing everything together.
I'm glad all of you seem to think this is great. I've been fairly annoyed the last few times I've been to Crobar because of different things they've tried (summer music format, crappy crowd), but I don't understand how anyone thinks all these closings, including Spirit and Avalon, are going to help the NYC nightlife by pushing things back underground. They're not, and in the end, we'll have less venues to choose from to get the same music, forcing groups of people who don't want to interact with each other into the same spaces and causing everyone's nights to suck a little bit more. You blame the space, but in my mind, the real problem isn't the space, it's the people, who are a reflection of society in general, who are making the clubs that most of you don't like suck. After Crobar, Avalon, and Spirit close, they'll just find new venues, like Love, Shelter, and Pacha. In fact, we're already seeing it @ Pacha, whose crowd has gotten worse, not better, since its "new club" novelty has worn off. Danny Howells was a prime example of this, as I saw many of the same exact same crackheads there as I've seen @ Spirit and Crobar (and I do mean, the exact same people, when you've seen them this many times, their faces do stick out).
Lastly, I don't see how any of you think that investors, forced to deal with Manhattan's rent prices, are going to open more spaces that cater to providing cheap, underground parties. It just doesn't make good business sense. Their insurance fees are through the roof, space is expensive for that much square footage, the electricity bill is probably insane, the list goes on.
Oh, and while you're complaining about how much "the club" charges for cover, blame your favorite DJs for the cost of your increased covers because their fees are a big contributing factor. |

Lots of good points made. I mostly agree with Konijin and GhB. Crobar is the most consistent McClub in NYC right now. Whether or not you agree with the covers and door policy, it fills a niche in New York nightlife. To lose it would cause a ripple effect that would have a negative impact on all the EDM venues. We already experienced that with Spirit closing. I never really liked that venue, but at least it kept the crowds I didn’t like away from venues I did enjoy. And once in a while they’d bring in big names that wouldn’t play elsewhere. The juiceheads and crackies aren’t going to disappear. They’ll just find another venue to infiltrate, mainly Pacha, the only big room club that will be left.
While we love underground clubs for their vibe, you’re not going to get Sasha and Digweed to play at a small place like Love. First, unless DJs started doing gigs gratis, a small club won’t be able to afford them. Second, there are too many people who want to see them. Is it fair to only let 300 people have the experience? New York doesn’t have the festivals Europe does for big names to play to big crowds on a consistent basis. Unless, you want to start traveling far to see popular DJs we need megaclubs like Crobar to fill that need. |

| i have mixed feelings about this as well.. at first i was like YES, let that hell hole of a club rot.. lol but then i was also thinking about other clubs that will be affecting by this, mainly by crobar's crowd dispersement.. however, there also are other places that guidos will flock ('Show', anyone? i went there once with dom and michi and thought i died and went straight to hell.) point is there a lot of clubs that we forget about that cater to the guido crowd and perhaps they will take the bulk of the crobar shutdown debris. on that note, i never really experienced a bad crowd at pacha i have to say. a few guidos from the leftover SF days but overall, i have had good experiences there but the total only adds up to 5 or 6 so i dunno...the only nite that was overflowing with guidos so digusting i had to literally control my gag reflex (and im not even kidding, i swear to sweet jesus) was DT vs Cox night. god, i should have called Terminex that nite to fumigate those cockroaches. i guess we shall see what happens if crobar really is closing down.. |
