November 17, 2006 -- CROBAR owners Kenny Smith and Cal Fortis may be forced to say goodbye to their West Chelsea nightclub. Page Six hears its financial backers - described as "tough-guy Greeks who wear track suits and flashy jewelry" (including one "real b-buster" ironically called "Little Tommy") - are pulling the plug. Smith and Fortis have two other Crobars, one in Miami and one in Chicago, but our tipster assures us they are "being pushed out" of New York. Crobar did not respond to calls.

the product of mass marketing and the mainstream effects of electronic music

bring that back underground and not for those who are out to be seen

thats where the real money is

Wow. That's kinda crazy. I agree with Brian, bring it underground. Crobar = Studio 54. Someone needs to make something like The Paradise Garage. Just my opinion.

Edit: OK, maybe Crobar isn't the equivalent of Studio 54 but whenever I go there I always end up seeing a bunch of drunk s who don't know how to act.

cal and kenny haven't been running crobar since the winter of '04 when the backers pushed them to the sidelines due to underperformance [this led to crobar actually booking dope lineups and bringing in crowds since the original owners wanted to focus on "ambiance" and a super-exclusive vibe.]

for its faults crobar is far and away the best and most consistent big room in the city and has been for the past two years. nobody can touch their lineups -- despite the gimp complaints on this forum.

i hardly think crobar is an elitist place "for those who like to be seen" as i have rarely heard of anyone turned away at the door. anyone who clubbed in the mid-late '90s will recall that an average club back then had door policies similar to more exclusive clubs today.

unless a comparable main room pops up, this will ultimately be super sucky. pacha, with its juicemonkey crowd [way worse than crobar] and awful staff is on the fast track to becoming factory pt2...

so you'd choose a red rope affair over vynil? where at vynil you could roll up sunday morning at 7am for DT's true be yourself party and still pay $15 to get in with no line and a really packed DARK room? or would you prefer the $45 cover for crobar at 4am while waiting a good hour only to have the dress stipulation held over your head constantly. btw i was turned away from crobar which I'm sure you've heard already...

i'd prefer vynil my man...similar to what we have now is club love.

agreed though twilo was a crobar-esk venue at the time (compared to vynil), but it never turned people away. actually now that i think about it, they only turned away sections of people on line at twilo =P - the famous "Everyone from here to here - get off and get to the back of the line" - been there done that don't need to continue doing it but in the end knew i was getting in even after waiting 3hours for pvd which went well into 9am

Im pretty sure Crobar made more money in their two yrs than all of the mini-lounges/clubs in that same period did all together. Undeground is dead. Its all about the mega clubs nowadays, not just here in NYC, but abroad as well, including Germany. Club Tresor closed its doors down, opened as an underground spot and now theres just these large scale clubs with bottle service. Its the general trend. Partly its because of EDM gaining more popularity over the yrs and catering to a larger group of ppl. particularly here in the states. Back in the day, only a small number of ppl knew about a DJ, where they were gonna be playing, and came out to hear them. They def. didnt make a lot of money back then, including the artists who played. Nowadays, a DJ Go Yourself is making 10K for a 5 hr set. Prices have gone up in all aspects of the industry, both from the clubs point of view and those who go out to enjoy themselves, the fans.

vinyl was dope, but the main reason was the djs [the club itself looked like ]. vinyl had some of the best bookings in the city -- danny (when he was good), junior, even oakey stopped by for the tranceport release party. love is nowhere near these levels.

small clubs have their place, but nyc needs a big room bringing in top talent consistently. that's why the 20$ vs 40$ cover argument is apples/oranges since the big room will always be 2x as much.

[you may have been turned away once, but crobar hardly qualifies a red velvet place -- if crobar is tough, what are pink elephant or cain (or marquee)?]

you are right, they did 'make more money', but thats a business perspective, same thing goes for the 'gaining more popularity' statement because that in itself is a product of marketing, another business ideology. don't get me wrong, when I say underground, I don't mean some hole in the wall or follow these instructions through the park to get to the secret rave, type of underground.

I've probably been advocating this for a majority of this year, and in no way do i disagree that the scene is moving towards bottle service mega-club mega-bucks type of venues, just that when the whole marketing and business angle takes over the fact that this was truely an underground (non-mainstream) genre, it never got the marketing bucks or attention as it does now. Of course devils advocate says when I was in those golden years, I was probably saying damn I wish this was at a bigger club.

Fact is that crobar has taken it way past the mainstream and the chelsea areas has brought negative attention to the area to the scene to the nightlife we all love. Mass marketing like that really draws the attention of all age ranges. It should be Crobars responsibility (and any other club within that area) to inhabit its customers who are of age (meaning no 18+). Prime example is meat packing, its strictly a 21+ area that never gets any attention about under age drinking or irresponsible teens only because the area is heavily populated by venues that cater to that age range.

I don't understand the hate for Crobar... I've never had a problem (neither have my friends), they always bring in awesome DJs(as opposed to love, where I've never heard of 98% of their lineup and is never packed, or close to packed, unless you count the few times I went on a Sunday), and Crobar is always packed to the brim.

They're doing something right - it'd be a damn shame if they got shut down and Pacha's left as THE big room in the city... I hate that place... just feels really cramped.

all the incidents surrounding it during this past year...and that lineup for the summer just CLINCHED it. watch, Pacha is next (JP for NYE :whip: )
