I think the American Office, while not as hillarious as the British Office, offers far more depth in its characters and themes. The American Office has strayed from the original British version to become a comedy-drama whose tone is completely original and unlike anything I have seen on television before. To say it is must simply mean you are missing everything, which would be hard, because they aren't overly subtle in most of the themes. To say it is worse than the British version is simply personal preference.
nah, UK comedy tv series' are just better than their american counterparts. its just how it is.

It's because you're British and don't get the humour (unless it's obscure). You will find some British people prefer the American version, but I'm pretty sure you'll NEVER find any American people who prefer the BBC version to the American one. The BBC one is just a lame 'comedy' created so that British people can understand it, the Americans took a ruined show and made it a great show . Ricky Gervais is as funny as walking on hot coals.
with some quite notable exceptions, american humour is designed for the lowest common denominator. you can see the (unfunny) punchline coming like the sunrise, and the only people that laugh are dumb people. mostly americans.

yeah the US one has definitely improved and the critics seem to think the same to. although im not a huge fan of SC, he has really come in to his own in the role.
just been reading about it on wikipedia, this pretty much sums it up...

Before its first airing, the New York Daily News called it "so diluted there's little left but muddy water", and USA Today called it a "passable imitation of a miles-better BBC original".[22] A Guardian Unlimited review panned its unoriginality, stating, "(Steve Carell) just seems to be trying too hard ... Maybe in later episodes when it deviates from Gervais and Merchant's script, he'll come into his own. But right now he's a pale imitation."[23]
Fortunately for Carell and the series, reviews became more positive as the second season progressed. Come December, Time Magazine remarked, "Producer Greg Daniels created not a copy but an interpretation that sends up distinctly American work conventions ... with a tone that's more satiric and less mordant. ... The new boss is different from the old boss, and that's fine by me."[24] Entertainment Weekly resonated these sentiments a week later, stating, "Thanks to the fearless Steve Carell, an ever-stronger supporting cast, and scripts that spew American corporate absurdist vernacular with perfect pitch, this undervalued remake does the near impossible — it honors Ricky Gervais' original and works on its own terms."[25]
Months later, The Onion's A.V. Club expressed its views on the show's progression: "After a rocky start, The Office improved immeasurably, instantly becoming one of TV's funniest, sharpest shows. The casting of Steve Carell in the Gervais role proved to be a masterstroke. The American Office is that rarest of anomalies: a remake of a classic show that both does right by its source and carves out its own strong identity."[26]

apologies for the spelling, grammar, flow of the next few paragraphs, typed this out fast at 4am.
ive watched all of both the UK & US one, and i do think the US one could of been a lot better if it hadnt been watered down so much. by watered down, im refering to the removal of things that easily offend americans (lets face it, americans are renowned to sue each other for anything and everything). Also, as pointed out, the humour is totally different between the two countries, and as a rule of thumb americans dont understand/appreciate sarcasm, sattire, dryness, dead-pan expressions and thoughts. unfortunately, the uk office was built around this humour and so it was impossible to translate.
coupled with the fact, i think the casting and acting is far better than the american one, i think the UK version is superior. gervais used to do up to 15 takes on scenes so they were perfect as could be. remember it was his and merchants vision that they were developing, that included the writing, directing, even the cutting & producing. It was their baby which they nutured to the state they wanted.
there is a famous saying that goes "a camel is a horse designed by comitee" and i think this applies here. the US version is milking it for what it was in the UK, trying to replicate it, in a modified way, but its had too many hands all over it to pull it off well.
finally i think its worth pointing out that in the UK, series end when they are considered 'done' generally (example include coupling, bottom, black adder, the office etc) but in the US networks string out series until people lose interest and no money is left to be maid, effectively the series kills itself.
...and as for the comment about character depth, i disagree, and remember the us office has run for 39 episodes, the uk version ran for 12. quality over quantity thanks. too many wish-washy, poorly scripted episodes in the US one.
as i said above, i've watched the entire US version. why? because although it is only at about half the level of the UK one for me, its still highly watchable, and mildly amusing. the thing everyone has to remember is that if it wasnt for the internet we probably wouldnt have seen the other countries version.. do you know why? because they weren't made to be funny to people living in different countries with different humour etc. my point being, we shouldnt really judge each others shows.
I too have watched every episode of both shows and this pretty much sums it up.
Oh and the UK one is not just different it is definately better

last week i actually watched the first two episodes of the british one (i would have watched more by my friends dvd was too scratched and it was too hard to watch with all the skipping) i had to have the subtitles on too cuz i miss some of the words they say but i thought it was pretty damn funny. imo they are both good, just a little different but ya the british one is funny from what ive seen of it, agreed that the humor is different but its really funny too and if anyone doesn't think the british one is funny, then i dont know

Where it's at!
