Nathan Barato - Smoke and Mirrors

Finally got a chance to listen to this.

While "Smoke" does have it's moments, I'm not the biggest fan. I find he goes one or two tracks too far with the chunky stuff at the beginning, risking it sounding a bit plodding/boring.

The tune at 26mins is definitely the best tune of CD1 for me, and I've played it like 15-20 times since I've downloaded this set. The song is dizzyingly hypnotic; druggy minimal at it's best. I especially liked how he worked the effects, blasting the highs at the climax. It would have been interesting to hear where he would have went with the more downtempo/druggy/slower stuff. He went into the banging stuff a little too quickly for me, but that could just be me wanting to hear what Nathan would sound like on a more downtempo tip.

"Mirrors" I found was a lot better. I like the way he started off the CD with a remix of the last song of "Smoke" (or was it a remix? not sure). The way it was done was quite creative. After listening to this CD a couple of times, I realized a Nathan trademark that I really enjoy. Every once in a while he will play tunes in which there seems to be a slight bit of tonal discord. I'm not sure if this is exactly what it is, but the tracks that I am speaking of sound slightly off-key, giving it a disorienting sound. I rarely (if ever) hear these kinds of tracks anywhere else. Examples can be found on the "Mirrors" CD at 7:00 and 55:40

Best tune of "Mirrors" goes to 39:05 (I really wish I had a tracklist so I could name tracks instead of just giving times, haha). This tune would be :eyespop: :eyespop: :eyespop: to hear live.
