Christian Smith - Club 4 - Barcelona - July 10, 2008

With a load of new music in the pipeline – including Flyertalk, a new one out on Bedrock this month – Christian Smith delivers a live MP3 mix from Club4 in Barcelona…

http://www.eq-mag.co.uk/00musicfile...10th%202008.mp3

It’s been quite a year so far for Christian Smith. First there was the massive Total Departure, his latest track with John Selway, released on Adam Beyer’s Drumcode. Then there’s the success of Christian’s weekly Club4 parties, which have seen Audion, Marco Carola, Paco Osuna, Adam Beyer and Par Grindvik taking to the decks recently. Then there was the super-hot Red Eye on Steve Lawler’s Viva label, followed by a slew of remixes for Jamie Stevens (from Infusion, on Dieb Audio), and Mark Brown (Cr2). And still to come there’s a single release on Dubfire’s Sci+Tec (the Push Factor EP), and a Smith & Selway remix of the Kevin Saunderson classic Rock To The Beat.

But before all that, there’s Flyertalk, the new solo single from Christian which has been signed to John Digweed’s recently revived Bedrock label, and it’s another total quality release. This searing big-room monster is getting plays from a massive range of DJs, from the techno purists to the trance kings.

But as Christian says: “Me and John have never been purists and always make music with proper arrangements. I think this is something that sets our music apart from many other techno producers. We always try to make smooth and gradual arrangements so that the track never gets boring.

“About 10 years ago we made a tune on Carl Cox's Intec label, called Move! This was the start of our crossover sound. Not only did Sasha license it for his legendary Ibiza Global Underground compilation, but everybody else from Danny Tenaglia to Deep Dish, and also some real techno purists like Jeff Mills and Surgeon rocked this track all the time.

“These days I’m very happy that techno is slower and that house and techno DJs play a lot of similar tracks. At the end of the day, it’s about good music. I really don’t care much about people who only play one style of music. I think a proper DJ can rock various crowds.”

Flyertalk is out on Bedrock on September 15. Visit www.myspace.com/christiansmithdj and www.djchristiansmith.com
