a BA is the "new" high school diploma? (pg. 2)

I knew people in HS who went to do trades, and others who went to do PHDs. Now the ones who did trades started out making about 2 (and sometimes 3) times more money than the ones who did PHDs will when they're finished. Not to mention these guys will be in severe debt. There really is no money to be made in being educated anymore. :/

Nursing rules. These are things I never have to worry about, thank god. Plus, most places have continuing education programs, so if I want to get my Masters and teach, or even my Ph.D and become a practitioner...I can! Whenever I want! Yayyy!

well if youve a degree than good on ya, but my mom did that 30 years ago and now is getting undercut by assistants without nursing degrees. nursing is a big field now because no one is going to school for it.

andrea, i literally mean i had a friend that worked there but gave up on the corporation quite quickly. i still work there as its entertaining, forces me to be mr. outgoing which im not generally and i can live with it. plus with moving you can generally transfer anywhere in the US, not to mention many places outside.

i could likely get a job using my degree, as it can be applied to many fields - yet sitting in an office, or working for the govt isnt quite my jam right now. ill have the rest of my life to completely hate my job (i only kinda hate it now) or find something i love|

It would be great if education held the same value in terms of securing employment and the apportionment of wages as it used to; however, it's very logical that it does not. Employees are nothing short of a comodity for employers. Just like any other comodity the law of supply and demand applies here. The more potential persons that meet your requirements there are the less each one is worth. There will always be someone with the same qualifications willing to take the job for less money, therefore, all labourers of equal quality are worth less.

I suspect that you can count on grad school getting more expensive. Universities have finite resources; however, just like with undergrad enrolement, grad school enrolement has increased. More applicants for the same amount of spots equals higher tuition and stricter acceptance requirements. Sorry.

Learn a trade like Computer networking, Cosmetology...etc....theres tons of jobs in these fields and the money is good. I worked on cars as a painter and also mechanical work and the money was really good. Especially cosmetology, they make a killing in a decent salon and the schooling is short. Think about it this way...theres always gonna be someone who needs a haircut, their car repaired, there AC fixed, so u will always be able to find work to pay the bills and fall back on during tough times...and when you can't find work in your desired field using your degree, u have a backup.

Yeah well that would never happen in Canada. They've changed it so all new nurses who want to practice have to have degrees. 30 years ago is not today my friend. Maybe your mom should have upgraded herself. Unfortunately, that's what a lot of older nurses are having to do if they want to keep their jobs. The standards and education outcomes are changing..nursing is always changing. It's not the kind of job where you just get your degree and sit on it, you have to keep educating yourself and staying on top of what is current.

Also, I find it hard to believe that they'd let an assistant without a nursing degree practice as a nurse. You have to be registered with the college of nurses and get a license to practice...here anyways.

Hey it's not a bad idea at all. I'm doing one right now. :) Thinking long term, I decided that the type of work I want to do will require a PhD (engineering). Plus a PhD gives you enormous leverage in the industry and it helps you climb up the techno-managerial ladder really fast. You should do it if you feel the need to do it, have the patience to do it and if you think it will help you achieve your goals.

well you cant upgrade by downgrading. my mom has a degree(RN) and got it at a time when it was hard to get into the best schools (which isnt the case anymore). she works private sector, so its a bit different that the average hospital, but she will be fine.

in the US they let assistant practitioners basically practice doctoral medicine with some training for a lot less money. in private clinics this is mostly dermatology/cosmetic, and it yields ire from most of the rest of the building, but massive profits for the one derm doc|

(plus trades can give you instant money, but little options if your trade disappears or gets competitive...projk)

Yeah im looking at my masters for engineering right now, i't will come down to if i get accepted or not. If i dont, off to the workforce for awhile, if i do i will defiantly go get a masters at least.

do it if at all you are interested. my engineering friend has yet again dropped out of undergrad because he has a job currently.

either degree gives you options throughout your life. thats all that will ever be important. if you choose otherwise your degree should give you options other if you change your goals.

workforce can change your ideals, but nothing you cant deal with|
