a BA is the "new" high school diploma? (pg. 7)

So this story seems backwards compared to the topic of the thread:

I went to apply for SAE Institute in LA a couple years ago and they wanted a copy of my high school diploma. I told them I didn't ever get one sent to me but it didn't matter because I had an AA and a BS degree. They said that didn't work and that they needed a high school diploma or else I couldn't register. It was like someone asking for for a dollar, I give them five, and then they give it back to me saying, "Sorry, five dollars isn't as much as one dollar." Dumbasses. Needless to say I decided not to go there.

whether a BA gets you a good job or not is not as important as how much time it will allow you to sit on your arse after highschool. seriously, half the reason i did honours is coz i didnt wanna get a job :D

I think you misunderstand. I would say that education is the bare minimum that you need ... in other words you don't even make it to the interview without uni unless you have some pretty damned good work experience. Uni alone, unless you're graduating from an ivy league school, does not make you stand out from every other shmuck that just graduated. And furthermore having lots of education with no work experience only means you're a good student not necessarily a good employee. Therefore I would probably be more inclined to hire someone who has a BS and 2 years of experience over someone who has a MS and no work experience.

Yea it really depends on the person. I actually think that you're both right and wrong depending on who the person is.

Sometimes someone can cruise through education and not put that much effort in, but if given a chance then they can prove their worth and actually put alot of effort into the job and be really good at it aka me :tongue3

Or, you could get someone who for the 4 years that someone spent at uni, actually worked and now has plenty of experience. They probably picked up most of the things they needed at work and now they are set.

Then there's the person who is so good at uni that you just know they will be a good employee.

On the other end of the scale is someone who finished uni but still really doesn't work well.

At the end of the day though for certain jobs you need an education. No amount of work experience will ever make up for the things you learn at uni.

For other jobs, a uni degree may even be overkill. A perfect example of this is marketing. Most people that work in the industry (at least in Australia) now advise students to do a 1 yera diploma in a college and then get straight into the industry.

As you can see there are many variables but generally education is a good thing but it's mostly a starting point. Experience counts for alot more (if you know what you're doing).

well you cant upgrade by downgrading. my mom has a degree(RN) and got it at a time when it was hard to get into the best schools (which isnt the case anymore). she works private sector, so its a bit different that the average hospital, but she will be fine.

in the US they let assistant practitioners basically practice doctoral medicine with some training for a lot less money. in private clinics this is mostly dermatology/cosmetic, and it yields ire from most of the rest of the building, but massive profits for the one derm doc|

(plus trades can give you instant money, but little options if your trade disappears or gets competitive...projk)

i know enough about nursing programs in the us to know that it's still hard as to get into most nursing programs. my cousin (A student, smart, etc) has been trying so hard to go to u of arizona flagstaff for nursing. SO hard to get into.

I think you are a bit off on this one.

perhaps, but i do know that my mom was refused at UM (michigan) in the late 70s, but when i graduated in 2004 they were actively pursuing applicants.

im not saying its easy, its not easy to get into any school for the most part. but nursing isnt the same career it was 20 years ago. its not guaranteed for life, and most hirings are based on assistants, not RNs.

im not a nurse so i dont know the full aspects of it, and i dont know wheter your cousin is actually as gifted as you say.

its the job market more and more that makes it difficult|

I actually put my education at the bottom of my resume. I hate it when HR sends me resumes of people who have a BS or a masters with no relevant work experience at all ... those go into the trash bin. Why would a company hire someone on the basis of their education alone? IMO that's the biggest risk you can take. Lots of education =! good worker. Oh yea, and even if you dislike your current job or your major, in an interview, at least fake it that you love your job or are passionate about your major. One girl that I interviewed said that people in her last job largely ignored her, didn't have time for her, or thought she was annoying. If that didn't seal the deal, I asked her if she subscribed to the philosophy of any economist or economic theory, and she said she didn't have any opinion really. She has a goddamned masters in economics and she has no opinion???

Biggest waste of an hour of my life. Somebody that retarded could at least be hot, but I was SOL.

Ok I don't have a "job". But I take care of the properties my parents own. This means I clean, do plumbing and eletrical work when it is needed. Also I do interviews with possible tenants and I manage who has payed and who hasn't payed. I also do yard work to keep the properties nice on the outside. These past three days have seen me working on a home that the tenants left extremely dirty. It took me a long time to clean all the mouse crap and other crap the tenants left. I don't get paid by my parents. But according to you am I not going to be a good employee because I haven't "worked" a single day in my life? I'd like to see you install a toilet all by yourself, see how easy that is for you or using a snake to unclog the pipes while having to walk into ankle high .

Oh, and I've also been threatend by several tenants that they are going to kill me, one went so far to throw a brick at my car while I was driving.
