I actually put my education at the bottom of my resume. I hate it when HR sends me resumes of people who have a BS or a masters with no relevant work experience at all ... those go into the trash bin. Why would a company hire someone on the basis of their education alone? IMO that's the biggest risk you can take. Lots of education =! good worker. Oh yea, and even if you dislike your current job or your major, in an interview, at least fake it that you love your job or are passionate about your major. One girl that I interviewed said that people in her last job largely ignored her, didn't have time for her, or thought she was annoying. If that didn't seal the deal, I asked her if she subscribed to the philosophy of any economist or economic theory, and she said she didn't have any opinion really. She has a goddamned masters in economics and she has no opinion???
Biggest waste of an hour of my life. Somebody that retarded could at least be hot, but I was SOL. |

if all the hiring managers think like you, then people fresh out of universities will never get jobs. Level of your university education is directly proportional to starting salary IMO. An engineer with B.S degree gets a salary in the range of $ 50K, M.S gets a starter of $ 60K. A Ph.D gets $75K-$80K or more. |

Education is a minimum requirement at best. Get internships people. Do something over the summer that you can put on your resume and get a few references who aren't professors. |

i would go as far to say that education makes people lazier.
its usually paid for by parents, rarely translates into work ethic, and most students cheat. i dont even think the mafia would keep you alive with those traits

I like how this thread has turned into getting a nice job without getting education. What's wrong with you people ? Education makes you lazy and students cheat ? Ok, how ethical is an employee who has no education as against someone who has ? Who cheats more ? Is there a trend ? what a whole bunch of crap. |

how is your judgment better than mine? both were hyperbolic and i went to a uni as well.
i doubt that someone who cannot read is destined to be a cheater or lazy. they might have to for terms of survival, but i also think that kids who only go to school and consider work totally boring are more likely to a)be employed and b)think that they are 'better' than their jobs.
which mostly means they will be whiny and lazy because theyve never actually had to work to support themselves.
i dont believe that is misguided

education is great and all.... but the proof that you have applied knowledge of said field is worth a lot more.
get your BA, whilst acquiring experience at your leisure... but make sure to get it!!!
personally i have a BA in communications and im fully bilingual in Spanish and English.... just the idea that I have a BA in comm. isn't enough.... being bilingual AND the proof i have used said skills is golden in the communications market....
only then, and soon enough, will i get a masters ;)
and anywayz, don't a good amount of graduate schools encourage "experience" to go along with the education? :thepirate |

now, before i didn't think a master's was all that important to have. currently, i know i am going to go for my master's degree in business/marketing/advertising in a year.
my bf said it like this: "a ba will get you an interview but a master's will help you get an interview and the job"
i was talking to someone at an alumni weekend a month ago and he was saying how he was planning on going back to school. he said that a ba has lost it's value or something like that...
i think it depends on what your field is. my major is communication and my minor is psychology. i have studied japanese (still studying it even though i just graduated)
i plan to take a year off, keep studying japanese, get a decent job and then go to get my masters in business. then i would be able to get a job i really want...
would you guys agree about a BA's current value?
there is no cor version, because if you really need a cor version then you may not know how to deal with this inquiry, lmao. i'm half joking... :) |
the way i see it. its all worthless when u control ur own income |

All I ever hear is this job makes x amount of money, this one makes more money. my whole goal in getting a career job is getting a job I like, cause then won't have to work another day in my life. funk the money, funk the stress, funk hating your job ;) |
True that. I really loved most of my recent jobs :)

also if a uni does their job and weeds out the real failures (im a firm believer that uni is not for everyone), no one will want to go there...less money for the institution. |
True that. My sister, for example, is living an incredibly miserable life because everyone's telling her that she should major in law. She wants to be a decorator.
She obviously wasn't born for that kind of life. |

I think you misunderstand. I would say that education is the bare minimum that you need ... in other words you don't even make it to the interview without uni unless you have some pretty damned good work experience. Uni alone, unless you're graduating from an ivy league school, does not make you stand out from every other shmuck that just graduated. And furthermore having lots of education with no work experience only means you're a good student not necessarily a good employee. Therefore I would probably be more inclined to hire someone who has a BS and 2 years of experience over someone who has a MS and no work experience. |

Haha yes, still am. :p
Actually I'm currently waiting to get into university as a mature student (because some idiot decided you had to be out of school for X ammount of months before you could apply, and I've only been out of college since last year). I should be getting in (either in a program or as an independant) in fall of 2008. In the meantime I'm working crappy ass jobs with near-minimum wage that I can't seem to keep for more than a few weeks at a time. Hence why I don't ever get to do anything interesting and all the MTL TAs dont even know what I look like. :p |
