now, before i didn't think a master's was all that important to have. currently, i know i am going to go for my master's degree in business/marketing/advertising in a year.

my bf said it like this: "a ba will get you an interview but a master's will help you get an interview and the job"

i was talking to someone at an alumni weekend a month ago and he was saying how he was planning on going back to school. he said that a ba has lost it's value or something like that...

i think it depends on what your field is. my major is communication and my minor is psychology. i have studied japanese (still studying it even though i just graduated)

i plan to take a year off, keep studying japanese, get a decent job and then go to get my masters in business. then i would be able to get a job i really want...

would you guys agree about a BA's current value?

there is no cor version, because if you really need a cor version then you may not know how to deal with this inquiry, lmao. i'm half joking... :)

Personally, I graduated with my BA in English and I got a Job on the spot at a local high school. It just depends on the degree, I know colleagues of mine that went into communication and it's been a year now and they still can't find a job. I would say it's the same thing for Business Degrees, too many poeople go into that major. My group was very small compared to psychology, business, communication, and general education majors that walked. At the same time, you need to see what kind of Ivy League college you graduate from. Many individuals that went to "certified" Universities like the University of Phoenix or online Universities really get set aside when their presented at interviews. Many job sites look at the prestige and recognition of the University that you attended. A BA has a lot of value, you just need to look into the job market. I would not recommend to go into something just because it's easy, go into something that is a challenge but yet it'll be a guarantee that you'll get a job as soon as you graduate

So is a BS better, then?

I have to say, this is kind of why Im getting my PhD. If I could do what I want to do with a BS I would have stopped, but I cant so I gotta keep being learned.

School's not all that bad. I like it. :tongue3

A Bachelor's is definately not the bar anymore. Unfortunately I'm still working on getting my BA, but I'm lucky enough to have a decent job w/ a Bank as a Senior Credit analyst. They do pay for some of the schooling (as long as it is related to a career at the bank obviously), $1500 per year for bachelor's or $2500 for grad classes. Unfortunately, this isn't enough $$ to significantly help out w/ schooling, being it costs anywhere from $15-20k per year for grad classes where I'm attending.

I need some more motivation to continue getting my Master's degree.

ya i fear the same thing... i was going for a BA in psychology. After hearing that a BA doesnt hold as much weight i decided to add a minor in spanish. now i do have a preatty solid internship for when i get out of school so i dont know if ill do my masters or not (since the internship is for 2 years) but hopefully i dont need it. if i do, going back to school is gonna suck cock.

i used to think this way too, but then i prioritized the things that are important to me in life, and i realized that making x amount of money is more important to me so i can reach x amount of goals.

things i want to do in life

travel the world (requires lots of money and vacation time)
build my dream home (requires lots of money)
family (requires lots of money, dream home, vacation time, health insurance, etc...)

so chosing a career that will allow me to make enough money to do all of those things is now my dream.

now, i'm not exactly getting into a career i hate, but my reasoning behind it was that i need to have a steady career where i know i'll make x amount of money so i can do all of those things i listed above and more. so it was more of a practical move for me.

i envy those who follow dream careers. i have no doubt i'll be happy in mine, but it's not my "dream career" that i'm going for. but i'll be happy knowing i can do all of the things i want to do in life though, and that's a dream in itself. good enough for me.

cor version: I've decided to apply for that job posted on craig's list

i think the problem is not just that everyone is getting a uni education, but also that things at unis are also a lot dumbed down these days so its easier for incompetent people to get degrees. i'm an engineering major i know tons of other students at school who are engineering majors but dont know , are always confused and totally lost in all classes, couldn't write a simple hello world program and so on. yet these guys go on to get degrees because the uni just passes them on. they really should screen these people out!

It's the same with my nursing program. I've personally witnessed them cutting the curriculum down to appease the ing whiners who can't handle it. And these cunts STILL whine. Ugh.

I agree but at the same time a lot of the jobs out there don't really require you to excel at the actual course work you completed (not nursing or engineering). They are things you "should" know or have learned and aren't really considered vital to the job. I think the biggest thing expected/necessary for any job is experience and on the job training, thats what's going to set you above the rest.
