i am hoping to go to school for part of my education abroad. i might do all my engineering schooling abroad. not sure but it sounds like a lot of fun. work and go to school in berlin all the while partying in the uk, europe, ibiza, and moscow! i would really love that.

Why would you think they're lazy. Atleast they attempted to do something with thier life, unlike others.

Anyone ever see this graph that compared college students today to college students about 60 years ago, where then most students went to college for the sake of knowledge and today most students go to college as a means to get a job?

Ukraine made the first bad generalization. I just reciprocated. ;)

Next time Ukraine tries to slander psychology, at least make a hasty generalization that has at least more of a popular bias, like "people in psychology are just finding cures for their own ed up heads" or "psychology is for women and fags."

its called credentialism and it occurs because the degrees you learn in school do not neccessarily transfer into better work skills then those who did not take the program. for instance in computer programming their may be a job opening for a senior visual basic programmer, however even though you really only need to know VB for the job, the reuirements for a interview include being proficient in c++ and java as well.

this helps explain the whole supply and demand thing.... its not really that their are people with the same qualifictaions who will do the job for less, its more that the employers simply raise the bar for no real reason other then that they can do to the overwhelming amount of applicatns for each job

I work in the IT field and if you want to get into any management type positions you better have a BA or BBA. Yeah, you can get a job as a programmer without one but those are the types of jobs that are being outsourced offshore. To be a systems analyst, project manager, or IT director and above no company I have worked for will even talk to you if you don't have your bachelors.

But do you need a masters? I dunno, maybe to get a CIO position it might help. But honestly, as long as you have that bachelors the second you walk into your first job and get your first work experience your education credentials are meaningless. I have never once in a job interview had anyone even mention my college much less ask me any questions about it. All the interviews are based on past work experience and will that translate to success at the new company.

It's pretty much the same over here. Bachelors are pretty much a requirement in IT (except for purely programming and some network management stuff), masters may come in handy when you want to get higher, but it's not nearly as important as skills and experience.

Still, I'm very happy I have my MSc. It does have its advantages sometimes (e.g., in the way you approach problems). Also, I am going to specialize myself in the field I did my master's thesis on (in a more practical way, though), which is a subject that's hardly being taught at a bachelor's level.
