I'm not saying that everyone will enjoy all kinds of EDM just because you listen to one type of EDM. But by listening to various types makes your knowledge greater and you also learn new tricks when it comes to producing if you are producer.
A good example of this is just to listen to various types of trance producers. The very best are often those who listens to mainly non-trance records. And compare them to those who only listen to the type of trance that they produce themselves. The result ends up really dull and boring. I've noticed this for a long time since I personally know several of these producers. |
Improving your knowledge is NOT equal to improving YOUR TASTE (correct me if i'm wrong but the lad talked about improving tastes...). I can be a genre-expert, knowing 1000 genres and owning 10.000.000.000 mp3s but still love the damn iron maiden...
You state about the "newbie" who listens to scooter but according to WHAT criterion is he a newbie? According to yours which goes like "Vibrasphere is cool music whereas Scooter is cheesy music for newwwbzzz". Ofcourse this criterion has no power or whatsoever since this is your subjective criterion which i don't give a @@, and i can easily then state that vibrasphere is pure garbage (for the example's sake ofcourse...)according to my criterion which states that "everyone who listens to prog-psy and not impressionistic classical is a...neewwwwbbbb". Ofcourse this is my own subjective criterion of which you don't give a @@ and hence you'll come back responding "what do you say???You need to have your ears cleaneedd newwb" (i have actually seen a lot of rediculous responses like that...) and hence we'll run in circles...Something which happens in trance-addict all the time...
And whoever stated that "We state our opinions and we have all the right to be negative" this is just bull of the purest form, since, as it was stated before, this is not a bloody opinion thread about the state of ASOT or trance or whatsoever, but just an ordinary boring top-5 thread in which you are supposed to CONTRIBUTE (and not...TROLL) about your top-5 ASOT tunes. Ok now you don't like ASOT, we got that (like anyone cares), you like the bloody tech-polka in which you find true beauty and perfection in its loops (like the loops of tech-polka, prog-psy or techno are MUCH different from epic-trance rofl...) so go and CONTRIBUTE (not...TROLL) to a tech-psy-prog-polka thread! |

what you're missing is that when things like the following are posted, I think we're entitled to debate it.

The problem is how the debate is done. Trance isn't just asot, as you, I & most other people seem to know, it's quite easy to like forms of it without coming close to playing anything that Armin chooses but do you have any idea just how many times we're personally attacked for stating opinions, it doesn't matter how well written we make things, how reasonable, how true, it still ends up with us being accused by guys like Mr. Square & his posse or neo95gt who pop up like smart arses every time anybody posts something that might be perceived to be negative. |

I don't know who these guys are or what they do, what i know is that i opened an ASOT top-5 thread and after the third response i saw the usual ironic responses (trolling?) such as 1.armada, 2.anjuna, 3.armada then 1.anthem, 2.anthem, 3.anthem and all that stuff, which ofcourse, after about 18 similarly ironic (trolling) posts, they could not in any-bloody-S&M way- be perceived as "funny" or whatsoever, but as down-right disturbing! So, now, what do you expect? Trolling leads to more trolling (this is like violence leads to more violence) and so on and so on. Its downright stupid how all these guys troll like maniacs, then they get a troll response and then respond back by stating "how do you dare! I was just stating my opinion no matter how negative it is!" Its like they are offended man... |

it's trolling from every angle though, they'd go nuts about it on monkey island where there was one troll, or was it an ogre, defending the bridge or something, it's been a long time since I played it. |

Monkey island was a great game mate. Unfortunately i can't recall the troll (or ogre?) scene from monkey island. How about other old lucas-film adventure games like day of the tentacle or indiana jones-the fate of Atlantis? These were also great! |

well generally they are still in that stage of self discovery and coming of age, where they are just starting to feel like the interesting and different trance-lover they always knew they were, so I can understand a little emotion here.
It's like the one thing that makes them feel different than "the mainstream". All that ty RAP music, damnit! Trance is like classical music!!!
imagine someone telling you the one thing that matters most to you (ie being in a state of dreamy electro beach trance bliss with ch00ns and a warm, silky, compressed armin radio voice), is "cheesy pap" and "unoriginal".. imagine! |

We are just looking out for the others who may want to have this discussion. Sure it may be entertaining, but it also gets old...people have the right to discuss ASOT if they want to (well they should) on a trance forum. There's no law saying that the only discussion on here should be either non-trance related, or only a specific type of trance (say psy, prog psy, old school). Neither I nor Petran really like ASOT or Armin (well not anymore at least) but we still think that those who still do...have that right to talk. This comes with thinking outside of yourself and not just looking out for your own amusement or self-interest.
There are younger people on here who may not be cultured like you or others on here when it comes to the history of trance or the different types of trance out there....some people may like ASOT and Armin and there shouldn't be a problem with that (no different than a child liking Seasame Street....would having them watch the History channel make them more knowledgeable..and improved taste? They might just like Seasame Street because they can relate to it...others may be able to relate more to ASOT or Armin..because that's what they are accustomed to and like. People will grow out of it or onto different types of music on their own times.
It's self-discovery really...sometimes that is better than someone saying "this is better! listen to this!" it might not mean as much. I largely found trance on accident..by listening to net-radio, but I was already starting to become familiar with the likes of BT and Moby (I know he's not trance, nor is BT totally trance either, but they were steps towards it). No one forced me to like trance, and I've discovered other genres on my own as well over the years..and even liked prog house/prog trance before the time I was getting into the more melodic, epic stuff. Maybe other people will do this as well. |
