No, I think it was a satellite that fell out of orbit, landed in the water, and disturbed the monster. The premise is that the monster has been lying dormant in the ocean for thousands of years and something triggers it's beatdown of Manhattan. |
I think it has to do with the deep sea drilling from the Tagruato Corp. I think they hit something too deep. Either that or they were drilling and space radiation from zee satellite seeped into something and caused some mutations? |

I'd love to see a series of short stories around this. And I haven't even seen the movie yet. :(
P.S. - 'P.S. - I Love You' does not have any giant monsters in it. :( |

It's not an alien, it's a deep sea creature...possibly mutated. I'm guessing whatever dropped out of the sky was a satellite from the Tagruato Corp. | what is the tagruato corp? didi i miss something in the movie? |

There is (maybe not any more :() a whole lot of background info on the story online. The blog I posted earlier doesn't give any spoilers away, and links you around to all the various websites that were set up for the movie. All those viral news videos of the oil rig exploding were in different languages (Italian, Russian, Spanish, French, Japanese, English), they've all been translated on his site too. Very cool stuff. |

I thought that too but then I remembered that I really liked her in 'Fried Green Tomatoes' and then I felt bad for thinking that. :( |

A couple of comments:
- The "earthquake" could have been anything. An asteroid crashing to the ground and bringing the beast from space, the ground being torn open to release the beast from the depths ala the Kraken from "Clash of the Titans" or simply the first round of destruction that went misreported.
- There is no way they dropped a nuke. They clearly said they would write off Manhattan, not the tri-state area. They were evacuating people across the river into Brooklyn (but really, couldn't the monster just leave the island if it really wanted to?) and anyone who has been to NYC knows that Brooklyn (as well as most of Long Island) would be in even a tactical nuke's blast radius.
- I don't really buy into the two monsters theory. As it was, I felt like the thing was just chilling for way too long. Midtown isn't all THAT big - if there were two where were they both hiding for big chunks of the movie?
- The military did respond REALLY fast... which makes me wonder if they were already prepared before the evening hit... something to think about.
- And yes, the monster did look a LOT like the big thing from "The Mist" and parts of this movie reminded me a lot of that one as well. Maybe even down to the origin of the monster. |

| I think it's safe to say the monster isn't from space. |

Yeah I know.
I understand cuz like one time I was trying to tell this guy how I understood something. But then it like dawned on me that like, WHOA did I? But I did. And it just kept like... wading over me like this giant galactic cosmosphere or something. But I didn't care cuz i understood it. He didn't understand my understanding though. I could understand his not understanding though. He was a walrus. But like I understood.
So yeah, I gotcha'.
