So I fly in from Toronto for Minitek this morning. Spend the day wandering the city and then head to the hotel to rest up for the Friday night venue. Wake up at 2AM, shower and walk down to Penn Pavilion only to see what appears to be a big line up. As I get closer I see its only people hanging around smoking so I walk up to the door (this is around 2:40AM) and am told by a cop "partys over, we're shutting it down...go home and go to coney island tomorrow...ask them for your money back then".
WTF
I hung around for about an hour and nothing changed. It just looked like they were waiting for more cops to show up to turn the lights on and clear the venue. One other cop told this other girl they were at double capacity within a couple hours so thats why they are being shut down.
I'm not pissed off...frustrated...shaking my head wondering how they could let this happen. For a party that was suppose to embrace technology, innovation...maybe they should have embraced mathematics.
When you're doing pre sale tickets there is no reason you should be at over capacity. You know the venues legal capacity, so you only sell that many tickets...selling more shows a total lack or respect for your clients. Waiting to see what the organizers say...
See everyone at Coney Island... I hope |

| My roommate went. It was shut down and MOVED to Rebel. He's still there now (7:15am). Carola is spinning. I hear it's supposed to go on until 8 or 9am. It's really unfortunate that the place had to be shut down in the first place but it's good to know there are SO many techno heads out there :) . This is the VERY FIRST minitek, so unfortunately that means they'll be working out all the kinks and glitches this time around. Hopefully that means next year will be boss. Hope the rest of the fest runs more smoothly for you guys... |

I feel bad if people don't read the other thread. | quote: | Originally posted by musicsnob_NOT
So off I went to see if the party had in fact been moved to Rebel. Left the hotel around 4:45AM and to be honest it was a bit weird being sober and walking around NYC by yourself at that time.
As I started the walk there is a bunch of construction going on near my hotel and its basically a path you have to walk thru with a plywood fence on one side and a bunch of construction trailers on the other side...not much space to move. As I was walking I hear some noise up ahead, honestly my heart started beating faster and I tensed up, but there was really no where I could go. So I kept walking and keep hearing the noise...then BAM...I realize i'm hearing sex. I see this big black guy on his knees on plowing this big black women (she was lying on one of the steps of the trailer)...I guess they hear me and suddenly it becomes quite. I keep walking...literally about a foot away from them when I pass them. When I get to be about 5 feet away they start going at it again. Finally I have a New York story to tell people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway...
I find the club, the party has in fact been moved. After waiting in line for about 10 minutes I get in (no problems..they just looked at your printed receipt). The place was going off. Great vibe, great crowd, and I liked the venue (not bad for a last minute change). Marco came on at 5:30 and Paco and him played until around 8:30 (swithing it up every 2 or 3 songs). Loved Marco, and Paco had his moments. Randomly ran into some people I know from Toronto which was cool. It was good times (even though I was completly sober).
Think I'm going to head to Coney Island earlier that I was planning on today.
I have to say good on the Minitek for finding another venue, and based on the size of the crowd it had to be shut down for other reasons. As I said in the post I wasn't mad (missing a party isn't worth it) I was more frustrated with the lack of information. |
The cops must have had it out for the Party...there is no way they could have been at capacity at Penn Plaza unless a couple thousand people went home after it was shut down. |

Whatever the problems, the promoter could have done a better job of getting the information out. Everybody was bitching at the security people but they didn't really know what to say besides that nobody was getting in. My wife and I waited patiently til 4am when we were finally told that the party was closed/shut down- go home. so we left around 4:30 after having met a really nice security guard who would have gotten us in if we had asked him earlier. First time I have never been able to get in anywhere and that includes NYC clubs/bars.
the promoters could have posted signs that the party had been moved. they could have jsut made some announcements outside but you barely saw their faces. It seemed they were scared.
I always defend promoters becasue I realize it's a tough business but they dropped the ball here. I'm also skeptical of the techno crowd because obviosuly some people knew they party was moved but they kept the information to themselves - really selfish.
My jeans were so skinny and tight it would have made Richie Hawtin proud. Ha ha. I thought as soon as they saw my skinny jeans I would be escorted right in. I'm joking here of course. Have to laugh at something.
I'm really sad because we came to NYC to see Paco Osuna who I talked to outside. So as my wife pointed out that we got see him.... When I talked to him I don't think he knew the party was being moved.
Anyway, I think my ranting is justified. So much for VIP tix... |

i would flip if i went to the gig and be told it got canceled but then it really got moved to another venue
i dont know the story cause i was not there but the minimoo people have a history of keeping info secret about their parties and if thats the case then thats a real dick move on their part if they did that
wont be able to make it any of the gigs but i hope everyone has a good time |

| It was an unfair, but smart move not telling everyone about the venue switch. Rebel doesn't have the space to hold all those people. They were pretty packed out with the venue switch being a secret. |

I'm not agreeing that what they did was morally right. The situation was really bad for everyone. They should have had a much larger backup venue planned out, and they should have told everyone that it was moved. But, if that was the case then only the first 700 at rebel would have gotten in, and the other 2,300 would have been turned away. |
