VIRGIN SET TO SPONSOR BRAWN GP

Three months ago, Ross Brawn didn't know if he would even be on the starting grid in Australia. This weekend, the new owner of Brawn Grand Prix is set to unveil a major new sponsor for his team.

According to the The Times newspaper, Virgin Group owner Sir Richard Branson has agreed to a multi-million dollar deal with the former Honda F1 squad. However, it is expected to fall short of title sponsorship of the team.

The deal, which has been confirmed by F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, is expected to be formally announced on Saturday and will mark the first major sponsorship signing since Brawn completed a management buyout of the F1 squad several weeks ago.

"Virgin and Brawn have come to commercial terms which he [Branson] thinks are viable," Ecclestone tells The Times. "I've been pushing, pushing, pushing and pushing. It's good for the team, it's good for Formula One, I'm very happy with it."

The report adds that extensive Virgin branding could appear on the Brawn cars in time for the green flag on Sunday.

Branson's name had been mentioned as a possible buyer for Honda F1 prior to Brawn's buyout. However, the entrepreneur stated there would have to be significant changes to the sport before he would consider becoming involved.

This will not be Branson's first foray into Formula One, having sponsored Eddie Jordan's team in 2002. Virgin Atlantic Japan have also backed former driver Takuma Sato, who just missed getting a full time ride with Toro Rosso this season.

^ Wicked news for Brawn GP!

Especially given their great qualifying performance today.

The whole field was turned upside down. Should be an exciting start to the season!

I think it's fair within the rules, and the big teams like McLaren and Ferrari are just bitter because they were left behind in the big re-design.

FORMER PROMOTER: MONTREAL F1 RACE COULD BE BACK BY 2011
THE CANADIAN PRESS
3/28/2009 1:24:15 PM

MONTREAL - The Canadian Grand Prix could be back on the Formula One schedule by 2011, according to a published report.

Former race promoter Normand Legault said in Saturday's edition of Montreal La Presse that he's optimistic the race will be back in the city even though the economic downturn may negatively effect F1 auto racing.

He adds Montreal successfully hosted the race for some 30 years and the city already has the infrastructure in place.

Legault says the city also falls in a time zone convenient for broadcasting the race in Europe.

The Canadian Grand Prix was dropped from the 2009 Formula One calendar last year.

^ They need to totally resurface the track with tarmac that won't break up after Friday practice if they have any hope of getting the race back.

They also need a race in the US to be packaged with it in order to make it cost-effective for the teams.

I would love to see F1 back in Montreal, but I don't think it'll happen in 2011.

I would also like to see Don Panoz do some more renovations to Mosport and have it host the F1 in alternating years with Montreal.

next year there are gonna be 3 new teams "including USF1" so who knows, they might push for the return of the indianapolis track in the season

I wonder if USF1 is gonna bring american auto makers in the sport too..
