I'm guessing that people who get addicted to gambling are the ones who act more on irrational "hunches" about "luck" (the coin flipped heads -- that means it's more likely I'll get tails on the next flip!) rather than sober assessments of probability.

:p

Yeah I hear you. I used to think the same way until I did my mental health rotation. There's really so much more to addiction than it simply being a matter of free will. These people are mentally ill, and there are many factors that contribute to why they become addicts.

edit: I actually felt like a jackass after learning what I learned. I was so ignorant about mental illness..specifically addiction and the homeless. I can't believe how I used to think!

yea i know. i definitely have more respect for serious mental illnesses such as bi-polar disorder and schizos. but i'm just sick of everyone ing complaining and being "depressed" and popping pills (meds) to make it all go away. it's all completely controllable and people basically make poor decisions that end up creating their own misery.

i just know how powerful the mind is and people don't realize their own mental strength. if you have some sort of phsyical urge to take a drug, your mind is still smart enough to know that you shouldn't right? or do these people literally forget what is right and wrong or "appropriate" i should say.

Good luck is the statistical clustering of favourable events. Occasionally you do hit a purple patch where everything goes right. When you finally win after a barren spell, you might think you're hitting a lucky patch. You might move slot machine or table.

If you're gambling in the first place, you've made peace with the idea of losing a certain amount of money. The very point of gambling is to accept that loss and hope that you will get lucky and hit a good spell.

When people gamble what they can't afford to lose, then they have a problem. Those people probably have irrational ideas or superstitions, or simply a poor understanding of probability. But whatever your understanding of it, gambling does have a thrill to it. It makes anything more interesting. I make lots of sporting bets. If I'm arguing with a friend over something, I'll bet money on being right. It adds an edge to everything - the potential of reward, the risk of failure and the uncertainty.

Addicts I have known have self-loathing and self-destructive tendencies. They don't necessarily care -- at least at the time they take the drugs -- that they could be messing up their lives in the long term. That may even be part of their intention. Or they may just think that relief from whatever pain they're feeling at the moment is worth the risk of long-term damage.

i completely disagree, therefore you cannot state these opinions as facts. lol

A little risk doesn't make things more interesting to you?

You disagree that there's potential of reward, risk of failure and uncertainty in a bet? The only subjective aspect is whether it has a thrill, which depends on how comfortable you are with taking risks.

the thought of losing money over a card game or silly bet, or even a sporting event makes me angry and/or nervous, not "thrilling" at all. lol

like i said, i take money seriously. i'm not into gambling and you will never be able to convince me that it's thrilling or worth the risk, etc...

i love playing poker, but i don't play for money. that just shows you right there that i actually like the game, not the idea that i'll win money (or lose).

i'm comfortable taking risks, but gambling to me is a careless risk.
