Good luck is the statistical clustering of favourable events. Occasionally you do hit a purple patch where everything goes right. When you finally win after a barren spell, you might think you're hitting a lucky patch. You might move slot machine or table.

Rationally, though, there's no reason to think that you're hitting a lucky patch, since most wins are not harbingers of an improbable cluster of wins. I guess part of it is that I can't understand how people's minds circumnavigate what to me are obvious rational problems like that. It's like they have some special power to suppress what they know and block it out of their mind, so that they can convince themselves to act contrary to their rational best interest; I find it quite fascinating actually.

If you're gambling in the first place, you've made peace with the idea of losing a certain amount of money. The very point of gambling is to accept that loss and hope that you will get lucky and hit a good spell.

When people gamble what they can't afford to lose, then they have a problem. Those people probably have irrational ideas or superstitions, or simply a poor understanding of probability. But whatever your understanding of it, gambling does have a thrill to it. It makes anything more interesting. I make lots of sporting bets. If I'm arguing with a friend over something, I'll bet money on being right. It adds an edge to everything - the potential of reward, the risk of failure and the uncertainty.

Yeah, I guess I just find it hard to get excited about the prospect of gambling where I know the odds are against me. I don't really find it thrilling. Even if I win, I don't find it rewarding; I feel as though I deserve to lose for being foolish enough to make the attempt.

On the other hand, I'm definitely much less averse to gambling on, say, the outcome of a sporting event, where the odds on which your bet are based could be wildly different than the actual probability of each outcome. I suppose I am better able to sympathize with someone addicted to gambling on those kinds of less-predictable events, although I would still think that at some point after enough losses they would realize that they don't have any special insight and relent...

Pretty much. I drink almost weekly, specially in the summer, but I can go on without drinking for months if I wanted to without any problem. I enjoy it, but it's not essential for me to have a good time. I feel bad for you guys that have alcohol as a crutch in your lives.

It's easy when you're still young (I say that in a nice way).

Wait until you have constant social and work functions, as well as a stressful and/or boring job. Your outlook will change significantly. There are some nights when a drink is all that will let me relax.
