I'd stick to military combat styles like Krav Maga or Sambo for self defence tactics. If you want to continuously train in a martial art as a hobby apart from self defence Muay Thai is great.. those bastards are hard as nails and will teach you how to use your fists, shins, knees and elbows as well as anyone else, without overcomplicating things, teaching you ancient weapons or meditation exercises (not that there's anything wrong with those things per se).
I think BJJ is only really good for groundwork, so I wouldn't learn it by itself. Might be worth doing a couple of classes down the track when you're reasonably confident with your stand up fighting.. it is useful to have some idea of what you can do if someone gets you on the ground.
I'd keep away from karate.. no offence but I think it just isn't worth it. I'd choose to do muay thai over karate any day.
Most Tae Kwan Do schools have been almost useless ever since it became an olympic sport.
Aikido has nice joint locks but is too passive to be readily adaptable to self defence in a short time period.
Judo is too focused on throws.
Most importantly - make sure you keep away from anyone that makes grandiose unsubstantiated claims (eg: secret 2000 year old martial art from the depths of a secret underground temple; Secret style developed in the US prison system; style that combines the best part of every style under the sun developed by SEALs etc etc..). It seems like an obvious point to make but ever since the 80s there have been sooo many sheisters in the MA and a ridiculous amount of people fall for them.
