I haven't done any formal MA training since I was a lot younger, and I don't follow MMA (we don't get it on tv here). But I have been in my share of "altercations" at bars n clubs when I was younger and still went to those sort of places.
But your question is certainly a pertinent one. :D |

Yeah .. as wanky as it might sound I think a lot of bar fights and street fights come down to attitude. The really tough guys are tough because not because they're technically proficient boxers or martial artists but because they don't get nervous in a fight situation and they're not scared to seriously injure someone. |
Agree with that entirely*, my big bro is like that. He just reacts, and no one messes. He's just really nervous and so on.
It's just all this chat about elbows and knees from other people, like some hairy dick is in the process of going to punch you in the face and you've got time to decide to use the knee or elbow based on youtube vids?
No you yourself and better smack him damn hard first. I don't know how to describe it but really the way I see it; if scared it's an acceptance that the only way out is through the person in front of you. And unless you really are a MMA guru anything else is a delay to action.
EDIT: *see this as a note that I reckon you know what I mean, and agree, and you aren't one of the other people I allude to |

I have to say that for self-defense purposes, Judo is pretty good. When I've fought MMA, I generally prefer wrestling because it's hard to throw people properly without the gi, but for self defense training with the gi helps a lot because chances are in a real alteraction your adversary will not be half naked.
In street fights I'm partial to throwing my opponent on the ground and then stomping and kicking the out of them. Judo has the most effective takedowns that will leave you standing. Sambo is good for that too; many of the techniques are the same. |

I partially agree. To most of us the natural, unthinking reaction to an attack is a punch but there's other guys who will naturally react by throwing a head-butt or an elbow, or who'll instinctively grab the person and try to wrestle them. I used to know a bouncer that trained at a boxing gym and almost every time the dude got into a scrap he'd mangle his wrists or knuckles (the other guy would be a lot worse off though lol). But it was because he was punching a bag with a gloved fist over and over and getting that into his muscle memory so when he reacted he did it with a poorly formed fist.
That's the way I see MA.. they teach you to do an elbow or kick or whatever and get you to do it over and over again, then get you to use it repeatedly in drills/sparring to the point where it just becomes a natural reaction. |

if you're a pro boxer and get in a street fight, your charges could double to "assault with a deadly weapon" simply because of what you do for a living.
and arbiter do you really get in fights a lot? lol
my dad's 2 front teeth are false because they've been knocked out twice in bar brawls...in australia with marines lol according to him, he did some damage too though. he's a former 3rd degree black belt. i say "former" because he doesn't practice it to this day but he did from the age of 6 all the way into his late 30s. he's also done judo and juu.
which is the one that teaches you how to take blows? |

| A good tactic is to push them off balance (early) then rush and smack them. But honestly for me a handshake or a drink is the best, why the ruin your night? |

A sweet straight gab is enough to drop most people (not that I can do it, but I've seen it).
Slylee personally I've got three broken teeth from scrapping with my brothers and broken some of theirs, broken nose a few times too but only from them (bar a rugby thing and one headbutt).
But to say it again, best option is always just a bit of crack/banter scrapping is pish/scary/dangerous. |

| Got tomorrow off so I'm running a few drinks but yep agree Slylee. Fighting is crack, and as I say you are lucky to win half the time. Good night out, no scraps = win. |

Not too much anymore, mainly because I don't go out drinking nearly as often. |
